Suggestion during server crash or server maintenance
« on: August 29, 2006, 06:18:15 pm »
i suggest that during the server maintenance of SMF For Free servers or maybe during a database crash like what happened a few days ago, SMF For Free should develop a code that will post a "Maintenance Mode" banner in the index page of our free forums so that our members will not wonder why the page is not accessible.

i don't know if this is possible but i hope it can be done so that also the administrators would not have to complain everything in the other thread asking why they can not view their forums.

a maintenance mode banner will be enough to give them an idea that something wrong is going on and the free forums are not accessible for a couple of hours or something like that.

Well SMF For Free actually kinda already has something like that in place, I think. During the last server heart stopper(that's what I'm calling it now ;) ) you may have noticed at certain points you may have recieved a little one line message at the top of the forum. I can't remember it exactly.

Now you have to remember...that one line message/maintenence banner is put on the same server as the ones that were down. However when those servers completely kill themselves(like they did last time) the servers can't even post a maintence message. They are completely dead for a while.

That's what I think..well something like that.

well ok then, i guess the emails that we administrators received last time is enough to keep us from going crazy and posting questions here, i did not post any question last time the server went down because in the first place i have already received that email and there's nothing to ask about.

but the problem does not lie with me, it's about my members... i hope i can notify all of them whenever something like that happens.

so, if i may rephrase my suggestion: would it be possible that SMF For Free send the same email i received to all the forum members? (i don't know if this is a stupid idea though)

and if possible, maybe kindly change the message from "error in database" to "server under maintenance".

with the large amount of members that all the forums smf for free has i cant see it....i would suggest  putting your members addys into your forum e mail account...and if anything ever happens, you yourself can send out emails to your members to let them know.

hmmm maybe there is a script that can do that, just like what he did when he sent us the emails... we administrators of his free forum have reached thousands in number i guess, and he did not send those emails by himself manually.

I think that would cause more problems than it solves if it had to email every member on every board...that would be 30 to 40k emails....Which would just strain the servers more and what it just says the server is down?? Doesn't really help or speed it up. Most times when the server is down it is under an hour or less and no one notices.

ah ok... maybe just change the email message that we administrators receive.

it is better to read: under maintenance

rather than: database error or something like that

 :)
