[suggestion] Private Message monitoring system
« on: June 01, 2009, 05:53:58 pm »
I'd just like to suggest a PM monitoring system for SMFforfree, This would allow you to monitor conversations via PMs throughout the use of your forum.

Thanks! :)

Never Happen.   SMF for Free has stated this many times.
Admins should never be able to read their members Personal Messages.
Private means Private and should be respected.
Also simplemachines will never add that ability to the software - that is in black and white on their site.

If there are issues between members you can set up the forum so they can Report a PM to Admin
And tell them to put each other in the ignore list.

I agree

But I think some members might abuse the Private message system and might take advantage of the fact that it will not be viewed by any other person with the exception of who it is addressed to.

It happens..   but reading your members PMs will never be allowed.
As I said you can set it so they can Report Pms to you - then you can deal with it.

btw:  I do not ever say "never" here unless I know it to be a fact  ;)

I have set the PM system to function this way already but I feel that more is needed to monitor PMs in a more accurate way. But you're right, people deserve their privacy.

Thanks for your help anyway.

But you're right, people deserve their privacy.

They do..   we lose enough of it on a daily basis in our offline lives.

SMF in general will never allow such an extension to exist officially nor do I believe that SMF For Free will create one.

You're out of luck.

This would violate some laws in some countries (depends where you live).

I find that the report pm allows for enough control over the issue of unlawful PMing most of the time  ::)

This idea is wrong on so many levels that I don't even know where to begin..... if people are going to talk behind your back, they're going to talk behind your back, regardless if it is PM, email or IM. If people know that others can "monitor" their PM's (i.e. read something that's none of their business), it would be very unlikely that they would use that feature.

I know I certainly wouldn't.

And as stated earlier in this thread simplemachines will NEVER incorporate nor allow the ability to read members PMs into the software -  SMF for Free will not give you the ability to do this either.

Also to repeat my earlier response to this:
