Need help editing the menu in default theme please
« on: December 19, 2006, 09:28:30 pm »
Hi there, I'm hoping someone can help me. I've posted this question in various places but it's like I'm asking for money or someone's first born child. I never get a response.

I really want to edit the menu section of my smf forum but I can't figure out how, and there aren't any tutorials that I've seen which provide clear instruction on how to change the look of the menu.

Basically I want to change the default menu buttons (and relocate them), and remove the avatar below the menu which shows when a user is logged in.

I don't know much PHP, aside form what Echo and IF statements are, but I can't really do anything with them. So basically I'm completly green. I do know enough html that I can design a decent website, but that doesn't help me when SMF themes are mixed with PHP.

Can anyone either help me edit this menu section, or point me in the direction of a tutorial/instructions/thread that will actually apply to what I'm trying to do?

Thank you in advance. (I did read the themes guide on the SMF forum, but that doesn't go into detail on how to actually move around the menu and change the way it looks.)

I could pay someone to do this for me, but then I wouldn't learn anything and I want to figure this out.

I have screenshots of the default menu that I'm using, and of the menu that I want if that would help. I also have the code for each theme, both the default and the one I want, but again, I haven't a clue what to do with them or what changes to make in the deafult to get the desired result.

ETA, I just realized this isn't a general SMF support board, but one for your clients of free hosting. Sorry about that! I'd still love some help though if anyone has the time.

What I do when I play around with theme editing. Is first make a backup copy of the file you are working on.
Then starting editing the new file in this case index.template.php

function template_above() - contains the header information the call to template_menu() will be found in this section. You can move that command around to another part of the template and see what affect it does.

function template_meun()  contains the menu functions that draws the menu on the screen inside there you will find the buttons for the menu.

Avatar would also be in template_header() i would search for avatar and see if you can find the code/html for it then try to remove it and see what happens.

Compare the code in the template with the source of the webpage when you view the source to see if you are in the right location.

Thanks for the response. I know where the parts I need are located, I just can't do anything with them. I need to change the entire look of the menu and that's not something I can wrap my head around.

I know exactly what I want it to look like, and I even have the code for it. I just don't know how to edit my current default theme to make it work.
