Is there a code that can add to the current side bar code that will let me show the "recent posts" within that side bar instead of the bottom of the forum ?

Or maybe there is already some kind of setting that I can not find ?

Yes you can do do so with ezportal. You can create your own sidebars and even place custom code in the sidebars. That is the preferred method.
