Modification: Adds a side navigation to your forum.

Where to put it: I recomend you put it under Footers.
Other Notes: You may edit just about any part of the code that is inside of the document.write('EDIT') just make sure you leave my copyright in there!

All this one did was put a huge black block at the bottom of my test site. What portions of the code are forum owners supposed to change to have it reflect areas of their forum?

We have already determined that these codes are for Simple Machines forums and not ours LL. I think Moosey is gonna help her edit them and try and get a working version for us. :)

Simple Machines is the name of the company that owns the copyright to the software. SMF stands for Simple Machines Forums (I think...lol). Whenever you see the term "Simple Machines", that is generally referencing this: www.simplemachines.org.

Take a look at the very bottom of your forum. Powered by SMF 1.1.4 = the software version. The next part of that line is who has copyrighted (written) the actual software and they are the only ones that you can download/install the full software from.
