Or LittleKidder you can make a non-post-count based group and deny the ability to create events in the calender. That way if anyone abuses the Calander you just put that person in that membergroup and don't worry about the Newbie group.

And never deny a permission unless you have to(in this case you have to) otherwise your Mods and others will not be able to make events. Whatever you do don't deny that Newbie group..just Clear the permission.

Hmmm .. that sounds wise.  But crasy, I think it would be a good idea if you put a tutorial on how to make non-post count based group.  I'm finding that a bit confusing.

Also .. in Edit Permissions there's a box below titled 'Permissions by Board.'  It lists all forum boards and against each is mentioned 'Switch To - Global / Local.'  What does this mean please?

Under 'Edit Permissions' i have denied permission to all groups to "Lock" a post.  But the Lock/unLock button is still appearing to members.  I'm thinking what I'm missing out on.  Or, do I need to edit this the same way as locking a board?

sticky doesnt "lock" the board. What it does is merely make the board remain at the "top of the topics in that thread". the difference is:

Sticky: remains at the top of the thread and members can still make reply posts.

Locked topics: remain at the top of the thread and noone but admins/moderators can make replies in that post.

hope this helps :)

Ah! Thanks kimmieb.  I didn't know this .. sure it was helpful  :)

Yes .. this is an important point.  However, the problem is, if a certain member puts inappropriate stuff, the only way to prevent that is to deny permission.  But I guess in that case that entire group will be denied permission.  E.g. if he is a newbie and I deny permission to 'Newbie' then other newbies will also be denied to create events on calendar.  Am i right?  Or, is it possible to disallow individual members as well.

It's modify.

And I probably didn't get the name right. Most of the stuff I post here is just from memory...I'll go get the exact title.

Edit: It's "Post New Topics"

Thanks crasy .. i get it now  :)

Adding onto what Kimmieb said,
Goto the board and edit the permissions of that board(next to modify)

Then choose all the groups that shouldn't be able to post a topic(by checking the check boxes) and chose Clear Permission(in the drop down) and choose Create A topic as the permission

Need a little more clarification please ..

In Manage Permission window there are 2 sets of checkboxes - one under title 'Access' and other by the side of 'Modify.'   Which set of checkboxes do I need to check?

Also .. I cannot find "Create a topic" at the drop down arrow of 'select permission' which has many options.  Or is it there under different title?  Please inform ..

Is there a way to lock a board?  For example,  I put a post titled "Forum Rules" and then lock the post, and also decide to lock that forum so that no new topics are posted there.

It's simple enough to lock a post, but can't figure out how to lock a forum or board so tht the 'New Topic' button doesn't show.  Please advise.

What's the significance of the term "sticky" in forums?

Somebody asked me and I wasn't sure of the answer, so I thought I'd ask someone here  :)

I just know that making a post 'sticky' would lock that board.

Songbird.   Glad that you got it worked out.

so that you know: Photobucket very recently made some changes to their site.    I did not immediately notice, as I generally use it for smaller files for my website.     However, I found out when I uploaded a new banner for our forum.     It was resized.

Easy fix   :)     When you go to Photobucket to upload an image you will notice an Uploading Options link underneath the upload area...

screenshot:

You'll see that is set to 800x600.

Click on that link,  then choose 17" screen (1024 x 768)    .   Click Upload It button to upload the file.
From here on out you will not run into having your graphics resized unless they are over 1024x768

Hey sibyl .. many thanks for your guidelines.  It worked this time! :D

I created a custom banner at flamingtext.com then put it up on my forum by entering its URL in Theme Settings.  but i'm sure i'm missing out on something, in that, the banner stays only for a while on the forum.  probably that's becoz it stays on the original server temporarily?  However, i've saved this image in my computer.  is there a way of downloading logo from the computer?  i can only find that option only for avatar, not logo.  Please advise.

Songbird.    No, there is n o such option  :)   You will need to upload the banner to someplace like Photobucket or Imageshack.    Cannot upload banner to the forum.     Photobucket is easy to use and will give you the code to put in after you upload the file.    Same thing with Imageshack.

Imageshack

Photobucket

I tried uploading at photobucket several times .. but it does not upload banners / logos.  It comes very small and appears the same if you upload it in forum.  Again, i'm not sure if i'm missing out on something.

I'll check imageshack.

However, at the moment I've generated an image at grsites.com   Here you have the option of signing up for your own folder and storing the image there with a filename and url.  from here i've uploaded in the forum.  i'm hoping it'll be ok.  but i'll have to wait and watch.

Thanks for the info, sibyl ..  :)
