Suggestions / Import/Export of Membership list
« on: July 10, 2008, 03:30:59 pm »
It'd be *very* useful to be able to import and export to CSV files the list of members and their data. This should also be very easy to implement, just dump out the database table of members.

Export would be useful to build lists and databases for snail-mailings, etc.

Import would be useful when uploading a bunch of new members without making them all register.

Thanks!

Nope you would have to do it in Excel manually

Do you mean look at each member from the admin | members page and manually type the information I see on the screen to an excel or whatever? Bletch. :(

Could you please tell me if it's possible to export the membership list of a forum into something like a CSV file I could slurp into Excel or something?

And what about importing, could I put a list of people in a certain CSV ordered file or something and import it into the membership list?

TIA!

That's what I was afraid of - operator error. :-)

I changed my selection to Checkbox, then clicked on '[settings]' then made other changes, then clicked on "Save" and assumed that it saved my "Checkbox" selection the next level up as well. I didn't know I had to click "Save" at the same level as the selection box *before* clicking "[settings]" in addition. I was confused. I got it to work now, thanks!

BTW, what does "Re-create field" mean under the custom field settings edit?

Suggestions / Global set 'notify'

For our forum, I'm expecting to have a number of folks who are not very computer-literate and are used to elists. It would be very convenient to be able to easily set a global 'notify' flag so that they would get an email whenever anything gets posted to any board without having to click the "NOTIFY" on each board. It'd have a link to the posting so it'd be very easy for them to get to the new posting.

Also the tab that's there is a toggle and they could end up clicking it twice and turning it back off again if their  eyes glaze over when you put out the dialog box telling whether it's turning on or off. Or better yet, have two buttons, like "NOTIFY-ON" and "NOTIFY-OFF" or something.

Thanks!

Only thing I can suggest is possibly typing up a Welcome post for them and in that post put suggestions for things they should/might want to set on the forum/in their profile/etc and directions for how to do so.

Yes, I plan to make some very simple instructions as you suggest. Thanks!

That should keep "text" as the type with no problem.

Yes, the Text setting works great. But it's stuck on Text all the time for me even if I try to change it to something else. Try to set it to one of the other choices like Checkbox and see if that works.

Its really up to them if they want all those emails or not.

Yes, but I expect we'll have some members who are barely technically competent to log in, and they're used to receiving news via an elist. I'd rather burden them with as few extra things as possible. It'd be very convenient to be able to easily set the notify for the entire forum.

Thanks for the tip about the 'announce', I think that'll do what I want.

however why not copy the emails they signed up with into a text folder
Yes, I can certainly do that, but I was hoping for an automagic way. I think the announce idea will work tho. What's this world coming to when the devil is helpful. :-)

Only thing I can think of is go back thru the settings carefully and see if you missed something.

But what settings could affect the ability to select "TEXT" and have it stick? And I don't see any way to 'commit' the change to this drop-down box. Could you please try it and see if it works? It could be a bug. I didn't want to post it as such yet because I'm just starting to play with it and it could also be that I'm broken instead of the PHP code being broken. :-)

I found from a search how I could ask additional questions during registration (pretty neat!) but I can't get the "Type" pull-down selection thing to work. No matter what I select, it always goes back to "Text" when I save the settings. Any suggestions?

BTW, I initially set up a test forum to try out a few things to see if it would do the job and I'm done with it. I didn't realize until I read the help that I can't actually delete the forum, but I assume you-folks can. Might as well save some space, so please delete it.
It's called 'mesa-test'

General Support / Default notification of new postings?

Is it possible to set a default someplace so that any topic or reply posted sends an email to all members that there's a new posting available? I realize they can set 'notify' once a topic is started, but it's difficult to remember to set it all the time as well as they have to remember to open "Additional Options...". Also, when a new topic is started, nobody will know it's there unless they actually check the forum manually, right?

And is it possible for a moderator or admin to send an email to all members?

Thanks very much!
