Oh, I see. I parsed his answer wrong. He quoted the error and replied. Sorry...

Could you please ask him to look at my configuration and see if it's configured properly?

I looked at the "Welcome Config" item and see nothing of interest there, in fact, there don't seem to be any settings to change anyway. What am I missing?

And AFAIK I didn't change anything between when it was working and when it stopped working, though I don't know exactly when it stopped working. I didn't even know about the "Welcome Config" item.

Please say again - database error when you posted (above). Feel free to delete that posting and this one.

No, I don't think it's the ISP, I checked with him (my ISP) and he's not seeing the messages (he checked his log files), and several different ISPs (for different admins) are not getting the admin notifications. Also, I'm getting reply posting notices just fine so email from the forum server is working.

Here's more info:

I tried 3 times now signing up a test name, and each time after I clicked on "Register", I got (as the person signing up) a screen that said:
    Database Error
Please try again. If you come back to this error screen, report the error to an administrator.

However, the member data *does* actually get put into the "pending members" category for approval in spite of the error.

So my theory is that the database error is happening *after* the new person's data is put into the membership database, but *before* the email is sent to the administrators so that would explain why the administrators aren't getting email. This sounds like an internal error of some sort.
Or maybe it's a grand conspiracy against me in particular.  :-)

Check Admin > Features and Options > Allow users to disable announcements
It was already unchecked, but it doesn't seem to me that would affect this issue.

And we all used to get notifications, but now we aren't. If there are no other ideas, I suppose I could add you into the forum if you'd like as an admin, then try signing up a test person, and seeing if you get email notification.

Sorry to be obtuse, but I can't find "Receive forum announcements and important notifications by email" anywhere.

I've looked in my Profile | Notifications and Email and I see only:
1) Receive Reply Notification only for the first unread reply (which is not checked)
2) Turn notification on when you post or reply to a topic (was off, turned on now)

That's what I thought (that it's email-server-related). However, you're seeing it on gmail, one of our admins is on comcast, and I'm on a friend's private email server, and we're all apparently seeing the problem, so that makes me suspicious that it might be smfforfree-related.

Like I said, I don't know how long it's been going on, the forum is very low traffic except for occasional spikes of activity like happened yesterday. It's kind of like flying, hours of boredom interspersed with moments of terror. :-)

Ah, thank you, that's where it is.

However, it's checked already and I used to get them. I thought it might be a spam-filter problem, but another admin on another server (comcast) isn't getting them either.

And I set 'notify' on this topic and I did get email that you had replied so it looks like the email from the forum server is getting through.

I don't know for how long now, but it appears that none of the admins are receiving emails when a new member signs up and needs approval. Is this a setting someplace where I've so far been unable to find? Any other ideas? Thanks!

Thanks! That worked!

In that list of options, there's a hot-link that says "Re-create field", I was afraid to try it, what does that do?

Is there a way in which a member can allow other members of the forum to view the custom fields in their profile?

In other words, one of the custom profile fields I have is "Name". it'd be nice if a member could set a bit that allows other forum members to view that field, or maybe to have a general setting to allow the viewing of all the custom fields.

Is there a way to do this?

Thanks!

Its just a dummy forum.
Is that an editorial opinion about me? :-) I added a reply there about it.

It sounds like SMF was written someplace else and you've modified it? Is that right? So that would probably explain why you've got features that other people running SMF stuff don't have. Where/who is the source for the original SMF?

How do I determine what smf version is running on smfforfree4 servers? And it seems like it'd be confusing that you're running 1.1.4 and somebody else is running 1.1.4 but the two installations have a LOT of differences.

What version is running on smfforfree4.com

We're also using the smf code hosted by Godaddy.com and it looks like it's missing a number of useful features. They're running smf 1.1.5 code.

And I can't find out the version of code you're running here. Are they just running an older version or something? Can they upgrade?

TIA!

BTW, I first went to support.smfforfree4.com and posted something there but that's apparently the wrong place. You might want to put a forwarding message there or something.

General Support / Subordinating and reordering topics?
« on: July 23, 2008, 06:44:51 pm »
I can see how to move a topic to a different message board, but I was wondering...

Is it possible to change the order of the list of topics within a message board?

Is it possible to move a topic posting to be a subordinate reply under a different topic instead of its own topic?

Similarly, is it possible to move a reply to be subordinate under a different topic (like in case the author put it in the wrong place)?

This is without deleting it and reposting it of course. If the answer is no, then...
Is it possible for a moderator to post something as though some other member posted it?

TIA!
