General Chat / Re: rules?
« on: April 11, 2010, 02:39:06 pm »
I've learned that the best way to moderate a small forum is to only have a few important, generalized rules.

Here at SMF Support we went a LONG time without having any rules. We only added rules so that it was clear to others what we expected.

The basic rules of SMF is we ask people to stay respectful, use only clean language, and let us handle the moderating. The rest of the rules are only there to prevent an annoyance that we were commonly dealing with. So, set the ground rules at your forum about what YOU plan your forum to be, and then let the rules create themselves as you see problems.

I love this list of "thoughts". Some aren't very feasible and we cannot do them all but the ideas are great.

General Support / Re: Closing a Board?
« on: April 10, 2010, 02:29:02 am »
Simply change the local permissions for the board. Change those permissions to not allow people to post topics, reply to topics, post polls, modify posts, delete posts, everything. Just deny all of their permissions excluding the ones to read topics and view the board.

Then the board is "locked down"

General Support / Re: Problem With IE Users Staying Loged In

If you made a .tk domain without registering it first you will have this issue repeatedly.
I got told by you guys last time it was a security setting issue. By the way, "Frank" and I work together if your wondering why I replied...

It's kinda like that.

A "cookie" is a file that our software uses to check if a user is logged in or not.
That cookie says it's from "lvcopsandrobbers.smfforfree3.com"
Your website tells users they are on "http://www.lv-cnr.tk/"

So there is a disagreement and the website pretends the user is logged out. You can't use domains like that.

Logs all actions of your moderators. Locking topics, deleting topics, blahblah. All of those moderation powers will be logged in a log you can access. This log can't be deleted for 24 hours too, so nobody can just delete their "questionable" action.

Likely has something to do with this service that you are using: http://www.dot.tk/en/pageA00C1A.html

Can't really tell right now because our server is down.

To people who are wondering but didn't read the link, SMF For Free posted a link up there about a problem happening to the company who hosts the services servers.

Basically, something going on with the company that provides internet access to the company that owns the websites. Confusing eh? Basically out of SMF For Free's hands.

Just as much of a frustration to him as it is to all of us =/ Ugh.

General Chat / Google now using Site Speed as a metric
« on: April 09, 2010, 03:16:46 pm »
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2010/04/using-site-speed-in-web-search-ranking.html

Well, check it out. Site speed is now used to help rank websites. They seem to mostly be using it to put pressure on websites to speed themselves up. Though apparently it is a weak metric, meaning it shouldn't be affecting search results in any dramatic way.

Though, can't hurt to speed up your forums though. Sometimes it feels like half of the complaints about slow loading forums comes from people whose forums are badly designed. Allowing your website to have a ton of large graphics on it, large animations, threads with too many pages or heavily nested quotes will slow your forums down.

Sounds like a good thing to me, coming from Google, but being so softly weighted isn't going to change much on the web :)

Crasy: Busy busy, has college and still finds time to get on here every now and then. Thanks for your help here through all the years, it's appreciated.

Much thanks. (:
I like to take some time to drop by. Like right now I'm between classes...no point in whipping out the homework during an hour long break.

SMF For Free is the simplemachines.org (Simple Machines Forums) software, modified to create a sort of "multi-site" host.

Which is mostly,
PHP
MySQL
HTML
Javascript
CSS

If you are curious to what these are, head over to www.w3schools.com and check them out (: You can learn what they are there, or even jump into learning them.

SMF For Free also features a unique set of modifications ontop of the regular forum "software package". Nearly all of these modifications were created by SMF For Free, for SMF For Free and others to use.

There is also a special set of other softwares on the server and modifications made to the software that is unique to SMF For Free. These softwares and modifications make SMF For Free easy-to-manage and allow the servers (computers running this service) to handle tens of thousands of online users at a time!

Make any boards you do not want non-members to see private. ;)

Do you need help with how to do this?

General Support / Re: How to delete your board
« on: February 13, 2010, 11:32:44 pm »
Chances are, it will not be deleted. Feel free to dispose of it yourself by locking it down using Maintenance Mode, as outlined by Andrew.

Other than that...it will just sit there until one day the forum is deleted through regular maintenance by the Administrator.

General Discussion / Re: Any idea to make a good forums for?
« on: February 12, 2010, 03:20:40 pm »
Meh, people probably focus on little things like a good URL and forum name too much. They focus too much on features, board names and even buying a domain name.

When the most important parts of a forum are a sense of community, good content, and good people. Focus on this.
And obviously a little advertising, getting the word out and encouraging members to bring their friends doesn't hurt!

Geez, just realized I made a post in this topic that was meant to go in another topic. Oops!

I like the new theme too. Good lookin' eh? She did it pretty quickly too! Efficient Sibyl.
Support left at the Core theme is probably best. People recognize it best.
