General Support / Re: Password reminder
« on: March 03, 2010, 08:53:54 pm »
Thanks for your reply.  The page gives you the choice of entering your user name or email address.  As I say, I have forgotten my user name so I entered my email address.

General Support / Password reminder

Forum Url: http://ooousers.smfforfree2.com/
I have no record of my user name or password.  I tried the password reminder link, first, by entering my email address and secondly by using the box labelled "Ask me my question".  In each case I got a page stating "That username does not exist".  I no longer want to use the forum.

General Support / Re: Moving my forum to .com

I believe you would need to get a separate database for your forum.  I've seen that mentioned in other posts.  $20 plus $1 per 100 posts.  Your new host may be willing to move your site but I think you'll need your data extracted from the general database.

General Support / Re: My forum is getting attacked
« on: April 05, 2007, 10:10:56 pm »
Can someone please explain what sort of "attack" could be involved, how you find the "host name" and whose "host name" you need.  "localhost" and "linuxbox" are two host names probably used quite commonly.

Having me around wouldn't help that.

Sorry to cause a misunderstanding.  I wasn't suggesting it should be fixed (although, perhaps it should).  I just wanted to explain that consulting it did not get me any further.

Why no access?  I had no problem.  I've seen a link somewhere here to a manual.  I thought it was the same one.

Go to the AdminCP->Permissions->Settings->Check "Enable advanced by-board permissions" then Save
Thank you.  That was the step I missed and, in fact, did not see.

It turns out that that the topic is mentioned in the manual: How do I lock boards without using DENY? EDIT: that page also omits reference to the step mentioned above.

Thank you all for the replies.

The only permissions relate to "access" which is to see and read the board.  "Permissions By Board" states
Quote
Here you can set whether a board uses the global permissions or has a specific permission regime. Using local permissions means that for that board, you can set every permission for every membergroup.
But that is untrue.  The only options are:  Normal | No polls | Reply only | Read only .  If I click on a Board name, nothing happens.

I'm looking at the url "... .smfforfree2.com/index.php?action=permissions;sa=board" which I get with Members >Permissions : "Permissions By Board".  Nowhere on the screen can I select "local permissions".  ???

I have in mind a sponsors board.

There are really two questions:

1.  Can I restrict write permissions for the board to the sponsors group - while allowing all groups, including guests, to read the board - and, if so, how?

2.  Can I, at the same time, prevent sponsors from writing to other boards while still being able to read most of the other boards and, again, if so, how?

I thought I might be able to do it by basing the group on Global Moderator but it seems not.  I haven't been able to find any answer so far.  Perhaps there's no way here because it's a free host but I'm looking ahead.

General Support / TinyPortal or TinyPortals - which works here?
« on: April 02, 2007, 07:02:18 am »
I've managed to load http://www.tinyportals.com/main/ which is evidently "Your #1 Stop for the latest & Greatest CMS Themes Free, Commercial, or Custom" AND http://www.tinyportal.net/ which "is dedicated to themes for the forum script Simple Machines Forum, as well as the TinyPortal mod."

I take it the latter is the one intended by earlier references.  I don't see any methods for importing the mod.

General Support / attachment file types
« on: April 02, 2007, 02:56:35 am »
I noticed when posting earlier that certain file types are permitted as attachments.  On checking in my "admin" area, I can find no way of removing or adding file types.  I was disappointed to see that doc is evidently permitted whereas open document format types are not. :police:

I did not post this in discussion because I am hoping there is a way of removing or adding file types.  Is there?

General Support / Re: Homepage?
« on: April 02, 2007, 02:27:37 am »
I'm after a real home page.  One that serves as an introduction to the site.  One link on the home page would be to the forum index.  I'm thinking in terms of a general support site using but not completely dominated by the forum format.

I'm very taken with the layout of this home page: http://sortedstudents.co.uk/

The portal isn't it.  I don't want any forum postings appearing on the home page.
