General Support / Bots?

Since my forum isn't popular (*sniff*), I haven't been purchasing many ad free credits. In the past couple of week, however, the credits are being eaten up by what I'll assume to be bots? I have at least 170 "visitors" at any time of the day.

Is this good or bad? Should I buy more ad free credits? Help!

So I paid for this thing advertised on the bottom of my forum, maxvisits.com, promising tons of traffic to my forum.

Nope.

It's a ripoff.

I used to be able to post the weblink to a you tube video on my forum and it would display.

Example:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NBM2vwc5HU

Now it doesn't and just shows the link.

How do I fix this?

lol...so after paying to have my forum a Featured Forum, I see I never actually plugged it myself on here.  :uglystupid2:

Anyhow...

Our forum's been around for several years now. Originally we were all about LOST and a little about politics. There's a veritable treasure chest of info on the forum about it. After LOST left the airwaves, we went back to discussing politics and pop culture.

With the advent of Facebook and Twitter, it's been difficult to recruit new members. But you know what? FB is becoming increasingly more difficult to see what your friends are up to and Twitter...well, it's just hard to have a discussion about anything in 140 characters or less.

Most of us on the forum are liberals. Some more so than others. I guess we're so good at what we do (we had practice on another forum that has since died) we can't get any conservatives to join.

So, here's a invitation.

We're a small close knit group in a mostly unmoderated environment. If you're a conservative, we'd like you to join. If you're a liberal, we'd like you to join. If you're neither, we'd like you to join. If you like to talk about TV, movies, or pop culture, we'd like you to join.

I'm trying to decide on a new style for my forum. I'd like it to be classy and to reflect the two sides of the forum - politics and pop culture. Can anyone help me?

(I'm stupid)

General Support / VigLink

Ok. I'm a little pissed...

I noticed on one of my poster's comments today that anytime I clicked a link in his posts taking me elsewhere, that link wouldrouted through a website called VigLink. This guy's a conspiracy theory nut so I thought he was involved.  :knuppel2:

It's one of those "pay for post" sites that pays a person who uses it if someone buys something through the link or other nefarious stuff like that and collects data from the person's computer who clicks a link.

I've also been seeing a huge increase in spam emails.

I also came across this:

So what's happening underneath?

After you embed the VigLink library on your page, it monitors when visitors click on a link pointing to a different site. The library checks to see if the URL of that link can be affiliated; if so, the link is automatically affiliated.

Will my users notice? Should I disclose it?

Most users do not notice on their own although we highly recommend you disclose it. VigLink does not change the user experience one bit. No links are inserted or removed on the page, there are no double-underlines or pop-ups, and mousing over a link looks "clean."

The US Federal Trade Commission requires that you disclose use of affiliate links. More information and tools are available.

Even if you are not subject to FTC jurisdiction, we strongly recommend you disclose. Our customers have found that readers are completely understanding if they are informed and can be upset if they are surprised. Informing your users will give those who desire it the opportunity to permanently opt-out. Although VigLink is unintrusive, it is easily detectable by savvy users.

Now I find that any link on my forum goes through this VisLink, including stuff I've posted.

Is this a SMF Free thing? Anyone know anything about it? How do I get rid of it?
