General Support / Just Wondering...

Forum Url: http://funcentral.smfforfree2.com
My friend (owner of newenglandsportsonline.com) has gotten an SMF forum.

He has his own server for his forum, I think that he said he got it from smfforfree.com, but it does not have any of the "Server Beach" Badges or any of the other ads on the bottom like it does on my forum (funcentral.smfforfree2.com).

I was wondering if it was possible to move my forum onto his server?

Is there any way to edit the time you have been logged in?

For me, it says that I have been logged in for XXXX amount of time. I want it to be YYYY time. How do I edit this?

Suggestions / The Option to Delete our own Posts in Specific Boards

Hey fellow supporters!

As you may know, currently, only moderators can remove posts (and the administrator of course) Well I think that members should have the option to remove their own post, after all we can edit them already, so why not be able to remove them too? I understand that maybe members cant remove them because mods may want to see them, but I still think that members deserve to be able to remove their own posts.

~Andrew

We have discussed this with SMF for Free (not too long ago)  He does not want members here to be able to delete their own posts.  There are threads that were being deleted that should not have been able to be deleted.   A topic would be solved and a member would delete the topic.    No one else gets help that way.

Members were deleting their ads so they could make a new one - thereby getting around the rule to place only ONE ad here.   When the new version of the software is installed here at Support all topics in that Board will need to be approved before posting.

People need to remember that this is a public Support Forum for this Business.
In a way it is a storage facility for all of the help topics - the questions, answers, etc.
The Topics and Posts that you post here are for everyone to see, to hopefully learn from.
Having Members delete their topics goes against the entire concept for Support.
So does locking a solved topic -  others can and should be allowed to reply to it if they need the same help.

Members on a support forum do NOT get the same options they get on their forums.    Keep in mind you are an Admin there on your own forum -  you are a Member here.

You know a way to solve this is actually what you told me to do in the Support Section of this forum.

All you need to do is set specific permissions for each board for each membergroup. All you need to do is just make it so we cannot delete our own topics in the Advertising Board and in any other boards you want us to keep the posts.

I believe we should be able to delete our own topics/ posts in the General Discussion and General Chat sections because we are not getting any support from there anyways... just talking.

And if you are worried about post count for the forum, or if you want to view the deleted topics, just set up another board called "Recycled Topics" and make all deleted threads go there. It is pretty simple to do really, and I am sure that SMF For Free knows how to do it (because even I know how to do it).

That is how you can help us all out. By letting us delete our own posts/ topics in the General Discsussion and General Chat Sections.

Note: This is an improved version of Andrew's original suggestion.

I was going to add a shop to my forum.

I was going to have some prizes and then their prices next to the item. Then when a member buys something, it is automatically added to their page...

but the only problem is that i have no idea how to do this... :/

so if anyone can please get me a code for this that would be great!

Thanks!

Suggestions / Auto - Email Before Deletion of Forums
« on: January 14, 2009, 06:19:48 pm »
New Request:

I say that from now on, rather than just having your forum deleted, you should have an automated system that sends an email to the owner of the forum 1-2 weeks in advance before deletion so the owner can go and either log in or post to save their forum.

Original Request:
Quote
I know that recently, SMF For Free has been straining for some space on his servers, so to help him, I propose the following idea:

I was wondering if SMF For Free could make a new program so that it automatically deletes any old/ un-used forums. It will not delete the forum, but rather send an email to the owner of the forum telling them that there have not been any posts on that forum for over 5 days, and that if they wanted to keep that forum, then they will have to go and make 2 posts on it. And if nothing is done about that in over 7 days, then the forum should be auto-deleted.

But I think that there should also be a rule that if your forum has over say 6000 posts, then it cannot be deleted (just to keep the growing forums still running).

Advantages:
  • There will be a LOT more space on the servers
  • With more space, we can add more forums
  • With more space, we can add more features to the forums
  • With more features, we can gain more members
  • With more members, SMF For Free can become even better!
  • By making smfforfree (servers 1-4) better, SMF For Free can make more money
  • By making more money, SMF For Free can take down some of those ads some people are complaining about
  • By taking those ads down and making more money, more people will join
  • By making more money, SMF For Free can get some more severs and make smfforfree even better!!

As you can see, there are a lot of advantages that all play into one another! In the end we come out with SMF For Free with more dough in his pockets and more members all over the smf community! And our forums will grow much faster because there are more members joining and posting!

So it is really a win - win situation for everyone!!

I was just googling some SMF stuff, and i happened to stumble upon this new thing called MySMF.. and the support forums are the exact same ones here as they are there... so i was wondering if SMF For Free has made a new smf website for all the smfforfree users.

Code Requests / Is this possible?
« on: January 11, 2009, 08:11:35 am »
Forum Url: http://funcentral.smfforfree2.com
I was wondering if you could hide the number of posts a user has on the forums.

That pretty much just means that it does not show the number of posts a person has, but it counts it secretly.

So pretty much a code that will hide the post count.

thanks!

Suggestions / Sponsered Link Suggestion

Suggestion Taken!!!

Ok, I know how much all of you do not like the new Sponsered Link thing, but that is not why I am here. I am here because I want to talk about some suggestions for the Sponsered Link person.

1. The Sponsered Link member can stay
2. The Sponsered Link member must NOT be an actual administrator, but rather a "Guest" who posts the ads with the name of "Sponsered Link"
For Example Something like this:

That way it really does not interfere with all the other people who have the changed images. What i mean by that is like for my forum, i have made all the admin stars each into an Admin Badge. So when the Sponsered Link person posts, then they have three admin badges and that looks really odd. So I was just hoping for this person to be a guest.

This will benefit everyone for two reasons, SMF For Free will still get his ads that he wants and we do not have to change around all this programming on our forums to accomodate. Also another reason this is good is because it will help to make it seem like we just have a Guest who likes to post ads rather than having a crazy admin (with three badges) who goes around only posting ads.

What makes the arguement about the guy being a guest is even more powerful by the fact that this person is not even a registered user on our forums, so it is even more awkward when you have someone who is not registered, is an admin and then also posts ads all over the place.

@SMF For Free - Please just make the Sponsered Link Person a Guest rather than a "Admin" with three admin badges. You still get the ads you want, and we (including members of the forum) get the piece of mind that we do not have a crazy admin in the staff!

Thanks for reading!

General Support / Sponsered Link Question
« on: January 10, 2009, 09:06:55 pm »
Forum Url: http://funcentral.smfforfree2.com
I was just looking at the "Sponsered Link" person as it posted on my forum, and i noticed that it had three of my Admin Badges and then it also had a post count.

I have a one suggestion about this Sponsered Link person.

- Please SMF For Free, please make him a "Guest" person who is posting because it looks really odd having someone who has three Admin badges on my forum. It is also kind of better that this person is a Guest because then people do not think that you are some sort of crazy person who makes Admins that post Ads all over the place. It will a gift to all of us!

Thanks!

Also, I have one question about that person's post count... Does it count as posts towards our forum? My Sponsered Link person has quite a few posts, so I was wondering if he/ she was counting these posts towards the forum's total posts.

Thanks!

General Support / Forum Members recieving SPAM??
« on: January 09, 2009, 05:13:06 pm »
Forum Url: http://funcentral.smfforfree2.com
I was informed just today from a member (whom i kind of trust) that he is recieving "Spam" messages to his gmail account (the one he registered with on the forums).

I do not believe this because i am not recieving anything from the SMF forums... and what makes this even more wierd is that aparently they "somehow" found out that it was coming from out MY IP ADDRESS!!!  >:(

i find this not true... please tell me whether this is true or not...

General Support / Ok... now i know something is wierd with my forum! >:/

Ok, well i first started noticing this small problem about 2 weeks ago... now it has really escalated... and is affecting the rest of my forum.

The first thing is started to notice was that the "Default" style had changed, and thus effected the rest of my other styles. (and yes, my other friends say they can see the problem as well).

And now, this happens:

As you can see, there are no lines in between the childboards.

The same thing is happening to the "Recent Posts" section on the portal... these lines seem to just disappear... and they never come back...

This is beginning to get really annoying... and i do not appreciate that the mods say that there is nothing wrong with my forum,  when (and you have a pic this time) it is really clearly there...

What is the problem with (and it seems this way) ONLY my forum? no one elses forums are getting messed up.. just mine...

is it because i need to now pay for a better forum service, or is this a switch between the old smf and the new version?

please tell me because this is getting really really annoying lately.

thanks.
