What is "RSC"?
RSC is means "RuneScape Classic". RuneScape Classic was the previous version of Runescape 2 (the game 99% of people play). RS2 was released in December 1, 2003. RSC remained open to everybody (f2p and p2p) until Jagex changed it to p2p only. Then, sometime in mid 2005, it was changed to "you must had played RS1 within the last 6 months to be able to play it AND be a member". There are currently very few people that are able to play RS1. Runescape Classic is also called Runescape 1 (RS1).
RSC Info
News: Section about Runescape being bought removed. I wrote it on Dec 8, 2007. When I didn't know as much about RS1 as I do now.
The following facts are from when RS1 was first opened to when RS2 was launched.
1. The member version of the game was launched on February 27, 2002.
2. The maximum combat level is 123. Prayer did affected combat level but not as much as in RS2.
3. You could only gain exp after killing the monster.
4. When your fatigue reached 100%, you had to go "ingame sleep" until it lowered. This was not in the game in the beginning. It is an addon
.
5. You could (still can) duel/stake anyone anywhere. When you died, you only lost your STAKED items and you spawned in Lumbridge.
6. Click here to view the original "planned" RS layout. This is not confirmed, so you can believe it or not.
7. Crumble Undead was 98exp per shot.
8. Al Karid (as it was originally called) was added a week or 2 after the game opened, before that it was just ocean.
9. There was no Adamant armor in the beginning. It was slowly released piece by piece. Same thing with rune. After Rune armor was integrated into the game (but no-one had it since no monsters dropped it or no-one could make it).
10. Beer could be drunk infinitely to raise your strength to level 99 which was promptly changed after word spread.
11. There was no buddy list at first, you used to have to type "tell (enter name)" then type your message and it would send your message.
12. Click here to see a picture of the RS highscores as of 2002, very old ^.^
13. Runescape Open Beta was released on Jan 12, 2001. Click here to see pic. From the Internet Archive, search "
http://jagex.com" > dec 5 2000 > "runescape coming soon!" =)
14. In the really early stages of RSC (before the wilderness), The Sabres had a huge influence. This is a pretty cool quote: Largest War: Barbarian Village Debacle (Mithril Clan and RPKers versus EARTH Alliance, Syndicate Alliance, Dark Syndicate Alliance, NKKA Clan, and Sabres) this war filled up an entire server, almost 75% of the approximately 1200 users signed in were fighting this war. - Taken from this website
15. The Wine trick. This was when you drunk wine down to level 8 or below and attacked dummies. They gave 5 attack experience and no hp experience. You would see level 13s with rune 2hs.
16. If you stood in one location for too long, it gave you a warning, saying that you needed to move or risk being logged out. So if you were say, waiting with your general store screen menu open, you had to close it and take a step and reopen it in order to not be logged out every little bit. If you didn't move, you would be logged out and have to type random text to be allowed back in.
17. Player names were case sensitive at first. Proof can be found by clicking here.
18. Edgeville was once called "Ghost Town".
19. Only one person could talk to a banker at a time.
How Runescape opened
NOTE: All information in this section has been confirmed by the real Rab.
Cyberwars was a popular game on GamesDomain where Andrew Gower wrote his net earlier games (link to the archive site March 2000). If you click "Cyber-wars" on the site, you will see that it says "Designed and programmed for GamesDomain by Jagex Software. Lead Programmer: Andrew Gower, Graphics by Ian Gower." He, Andrew, didn't own the site. This is where Rab, Lighting, Gugge, and Merlin met the brothers and their friends.
None of the RS alpha testers (Rab, Lightning, Gugge, and Merlin) ever played DeviousMUD. DeviousMUD was one of Andrew's many games.
Around Feb 2000, Andrew invited Rab, Lightning, Gugge, and Merlin to test the very basic Runescape. Only Lumbridge Castle, a sheep, and Bob existed. Gradually more things were added to Runescape. Rab created the "Romeo & Juliet" quest during the testing, closed, stage.
Runescape opened for the very first time to the public on January 4, 2001. When you made your account, you would select what you wanted to be; Wizard, Warrior, Range, Adventurer, or Necromancer. Tutorial Island did not exist. After this selection, you would select to be a "Player killer" or a "Non player-killer". Back then, you could attack anyone anywhere 5 levels above or below you. Banks did exist but you could only store coins and only 1 of them at a time.
On August 13, 2001, The Wilderness was added to Runescape and the previous player killing system was removed. On this same day, you could now see the exact experience you had in a skill. You couldn't before.

Runescape before the Wilderness
EXPAND / COLLAPSE
On August 13, 2001, the Wilderness was added to Runescape. Little is known about how Runescape was before the Wilderness but what is known, I have discovered. Huge to thanks to Hohto!
- Names were case sensitive back then
- Lumbridge was a safe zone.
- Banks were a safe zone.
- There was a level limit: 5 (or 4) levels above or bellow you
NOTE: Because of the picture limit, I have merged all pictures into one. Comments can be found at the bottom.
Go here to look at the pictures (cant find a host to upload):
http://officialzezima.com/board/index.php?showtopic=33Robin Hood2 was a feared pker back then. He was around level 70s and that was extremely high for the time.
QUOTE ("Hohto")
Robin Hood2 (aka Robin Hood) and Erixson were not just the top pkers. They were also ranked really high in combat skills. Because of level limits, they couldn't massacre anyone. The low number of high level pkers caused rivalries to be born. In that pic their armours (adamantite legs, mithril plate, steel long, steel kite, etc) look noobish, but it was the best possible set to get back in then. The lower pic is from the same battle but from a different view and doesn't show unfortunately any names.
QUOTE ("Hohto")
Legendary Sunjon and some Jagex staff. Sunjon was one of the feared pkers and highest leveled characters in whole game. Unfortunately he stepped to the dark side and got caught in the first massban ever, the Runebot massban.
Pictures of the legendary clan "Gladiatorz" (Gladz).
The Legendary Item Dupe
EXPAND / COLLAPSE
NOTE: Originally, crackers were made (duped) that would make Pink Partyhats. Pink Partyhats weren't the only items duped. It has been reported that other items (like Dragon Shield) were also duped.
The Legendary Pink Partyhat dupe. Many argue that this never happened but they are very wrong. This did happen and they are not the same item as Purple Partyhat. So here it goes. From Jut's website. Enjoy reading
Evidence that this DID happen. Page 28 (as of april 19, 2008)
QUOTE
7 November 2003 - Duplicated items in game
It has come to our attention that someone has worked out a way of duplicating or creating items in RuneScape unfairly. Particularly it seems they are doing this with christmas-crackers which produce party hats.
Obviously this is a pretty obscure problem, since it's taken over 10,000 combined years of RuneScape playing for anyone to find it, but we're determined to close this hole.
Update: This problem is now fixed, thanks for everyone who offered help. With respect to the reward we offered, this will be given to the person who sent the first email explaining how the object creation was done.
QUOTE
I was the person who discovered the dupe and used it, and told like 3 other people, and then it got leaked. If it hadn't gotten leaked, I would be rich and the economy wouldn't suck, and Jagex wouldn't be uber pissed at me. This shall be a historical acount of the third time of duping. Before you begin to read this, please know this had no intentions of hurting the economy, or Jagex in any way shape or form. As for me, I have been banned on every character I own (including ones that did not use the dupe and we're banned out of error. Jagex wouldn't listen to my appeal though). Because of this, I am also quitting RuneScape now. But hey, at least im going out with a major bang. Now, onto the fun/interesting stuff.
The way the dupe worked was when in a trade screen it would put up a non-stackable item with an amount of zero, where it would normally be one. This would trick my side into thinking I put up nothing, and the other into thinking I put up one. So really, it's not duping because you don't need one to start with. It's more like "Creation." It also used an item ID. An item id is the number given to an item. No, each item does not have it's own ID. All r2h's are item 81, and all pink hats are item 580. This is why it is extremely hard for Jagex to find out which hats are real and which are fake. Here are some other numbers of items:
580 - Pink Hat
579 - Green Hat
581 - White Hat
576 - Red Hat
578 - Blue Hat
577 - Yellow
1278 - Dragon Square
795 - Dragon Med
575 - Cracker
81 - Rune Two Hander
And the next morning. Note that this was my main, who I had NOT logged into at any time during the whole duping dealy so he wouldn't get banned for bug abuse. Well guess what, he was banned. And, he didn't abuse a bug. It tells me to check my message inbox, but guess what, they didn't give me a letter either. Oh well. Probably deserve it.
Just remember, this was all for historical purposes. I now am quitting
runescape. But like I said, I am going out with a bang. Also, I am very sorry to
anyone who may have been hurt by my actions, especially jagex themselves. It was fun while it lasted. Thanks everyone.
*PAUSE*.. go wash your face.. done? ok continue reading:
The story. Some guy (SixFeetUnder) was playing around with [link Removed] (RuneScape cheat), trying to trade a scythe. He failed. During his experiments he found out one rather interesting thing. Any nonstackable item can be created. Well, he got very excited and told 5 other people - me (Kaitnieks), Dylock, g0ne, Aid uand David. One of us couldn;t keep the mouth shut so in the next morning every RS player was crying about duped pink hats sold in Varrock for 5 mill each. Naturally it was just a matter of time for Jagex to find out, so I decided to have some fun. Like we did the other time with banker killing.Even I know that crackers and the silly hats are the most expensive items in the game. So naturally we created those. Oh, two guys also created and alched some kind of expensive shields (I dunno, drag squares or something - hey, don't call me n00b, I finally know where Al Kharid is). They made over 1 billion each. Anyway, here are pictures.
To create items, you must trade with someone. They can give you any nonstackable
item by specifying count = 0. It's fixed by now. Well done Jagex, took you less
than a whole day."
"Many people thanked me that day. I'm sure it was good for economy and people who
had no chance to get a silly hat, too bad we didn;t manage to make way more of
them."
"The background. Here are some random facts.
1) Hats and other items were created by [link Removed]. [link Removed] is infamous RS cheat,
you don't need to know much about it, just how Jagex said there are no cheats
for RuneScape. Did they make a mistake or did they lie to you? You decide.
Anyway if someone offers you [link Removed], don't download it, it's not being given
to anyone and what you will be downloading is a keylogger. Trust me, that is so.
2) Almost all players who created items got banned. Someone made 40 mill,
someone almost 100 mill and didn't get banned but most of the accounts did.
Especially those having 1 bill GPs and 100 sets of hats. My personal gain is
some pink hats and ~5k steel bars. Not that much eh?
3) It took several hours for Jagex to figure out the problem and fix it. During
this time they didn't do anything to stop the duping.
4) Jagex could not trace which items are duped and which are normal. That's why
only some items got deleted.
5) The situation in market is very unstable but seems like the rarest hat (pink
one, the most ugly hat) is now one of the most common.
6) Jagex did not roll back. I guess they don't really mind seeing rares becoming
less rare.
7) Andrew doesn't have sense of humor. Mod Mark does. He's the man! But
Andrew... You should all send e-mail to Andrew and tell him you love him, he's
very sad and lonely. Andrew promised Dylock lifetime membership if he helps.
Instead of that he banned his account. Go on, help the kind RS mods, your reward
will be a ban, you know you want it.
Cloned names and Fake moderators
EXPAND / COLLAPSE
An user named "Diablorl" (aka David) found a way to add a space at the end and thereby cloning a name. He created the name "Paul_" (one space at the end) which very closely resembled Paul. Paul is the brother of Andrew Gower (games creator and current owner of Jagex Ltd) and had (still has) a golden moderator clown before his name.
Back to the story: He created the name "Paul_" (a space at the end) and started to spam. Many, if not all, players thought that he was the real Paul and were very confused. Although, a good amount of real Jagex Moderators did show up after a while, they were unable to boot (kick) him from the server because it would cause a "con to the whole server" [hohto]. These are the pictures:
Some pictures have white text as black, report abuse area as fully red, and ect. This is because I just right clicked and copy+pasted, instead of saving, then opening.
The Knife Bug
EXPAND / COLLAPSE
-----THE KNIFE BUG-----
This is nothing new to ME.. I have read before.. but yea it has "faint" away into my memories.. and I just forgot to add it to this topic until Meili started posting lolz. Here it goes. Enjoy -.-
From Meilis website (link in contributors list).
QUOTE
What was the knife bug?
The knife bug is an old bug where players could equip knives which were then a useless item but spawned upstairs of varrock general store. Apparently when Jagex created knives they put 3 weapon aim and weapon power on it but at first they were useless, it was only when flecthing came out in members that knives became useful. Each knife gave an additional 3 weapon aim and 3 weapon power to whatever you wielded.
Many players were banned for this bug such as Bigkingsfan, Grubyyyyyyyyy, Trupimp, Silentboy05, etc. Silentboy and Trupimp's permanent bans were later made into temporary bans and they got to play on their characters again.
The beginning
The first I ever heard of it was whispers in the game of some players being able to hit 30s. This was Jan or very early 2002, I think, and the max hit was supposed to be 30 with 99 str and no one had 99 str yet.
How the knife bug worked
Special note: this does not work anymore and these pics are recent ones, not from the actual time that you could do the knife bug.
In your inventory have a weapon. Knives should be in the space to the right of the weapon. Click on the mini map so that your char starts walking then click on "drop the weapon." Now, as I'm sure we all know, if you try to drop something while you are walking it doesn't drop until your char has stopped. Before you char stops moving, right click on the weapon, as shown on the pic below:
In the pic below it shows that the weapon has been dropped, however the "wield weapon" option is still available and the knife is now in the place where the weapon was. If you click on "wield" then the knives were wielded!
When a knife was equipped it added weapon aim and power, the more knives you had equipped, the more weapon aim/power you had. The only drawback was if you equipped a lot of knives you had no room for food.
Someone gave me this pic of a newb using knife bug and hitting 25 with a bronze hatchet and knives on a greater demon.
Day of the knives
Now apparently some people had discovered the knife bug but it was a closely guarded secret. However, a lower level player X Magna X if I remember correctly couldn't resist showing off and numerous people saw him hitting a 30 which was impossible for him to do because it would have required him to have 99 str (which he couldn't possibly have due to his total xp which was seen on hiscores). Then the secret itself was posted in a Runescape fansite forum.
After the secret was revealed it was total chaos for one day as everyone tested/pked/trained the knife bug. People were hitting huge numbers left and right, people with even mid level str could hit 30s while those with high str easily hit in the 40s.
Funnily enough since there was only one source of knives people would stand at the knife spawn and check to see which players were collecting knives, which included RS's famous poeple.
Fixing the knife bug
After a time Paul took partial control of the situation as he started banning people for using the knife bug. Most players then stopped using it on their mains but low level wildy was full of noob pkers hitting 30s.
Hohto gave me this pic of the old-style rainbow system message of Angel2002 being banned.
It was actually a day of much fun, hardly anyone seems to have lost much and people enjoyed hitting all of those high numbers. New players were made with names "knife" or "knives" in it to remember this day.
The next day the bug was fixed and knives could no longer be equipped. A punishment was also added - those who logged in with knives equipped in their inventory died instantly. This is what actually led to a lot of people losing their valuable items, most notably Buffyslayer was instant killed when she logged in and lost her rune kite which at the time was worth over 10 million gp or so.
Runescape Firsts (2)
EXPAND / COLLAPSE
Runescape Firsts!
These are the people who were the very first to do a certain thing. Some may no longer appear on highscores because of many reasons. Some are: account deleted - not logged in in over 4 to 5 years, stats too low, never moved to RS2 = stats don't show, and many others. All are real. Enjoy!
From this website (added to contributors list) - If it doesn't appear, it was taken down (if you are reading this some years/months later).
Some may already be in the fact sheet but many more are not

Second RS fansite *ever*
EXPAND / COLLAPSE
While reading the Gower Archive forums, I saw a topic that was named "Second RS fansite ever" or something similar. The oldest file I found was uploaded on their website on 24-Jan-2001 23:29! I have also found some information on previously totally unknown or not much information available.
While on their "Get Started" page, I got the following
QUOTE
- Warrior - Warriors start out with a bronze short sword and wooden shield. They also have 3 attack, defence, and strength. If you start out with this class, you will also start with 12 hitpoints.
- Wizard - Wizards start out with a staff and a blue wizards hat. Their stats are 1 attack, defence, and strength with 10 hitpoints. You will also start with +6 Goodmagic.
- Adventurer - Adventurers start out with 11 hitpoints with 1 attack, defence, and strength. When you start, you will also get a bronze axe(hatchet), jug, pot, and tinderbox.
- Necromancer - Rangers start with 10 hitpoints, a staff, and black wizards hat. They also have 1 attack, defense, and strength.
- Ranger - Rangers start out with a shortbow and 10 arrows. They also have 12 hitpoints, 1 attack, defense, and strength level.
You may be wondering: "What does this mean...?". I will explain. At the very very beginning, you could choose what type of player you wanted to be. This quote gives us more information on this. Click here to access the website.
Banker killing fest
EXPAND / COLLAPSE
QUOTE
-NOTE: This happened BEFORE the pink partyhat dupe-
Somehow, some players were able to kill bankers using the same program that allowed item duping. The pictures with the name of the program that allowed this, have had the program named blacked out. The website where I got this from cannot be credited to because it contains some links to autoing websites. This bug didn't last very long =p. The last picture is another picture of the black hole (very few pictures around). All pictures were "linked" into one picture to save "picture space" (50 picture limit).
All this was done with -
All I had was a lvl3 character, a shortbow and some arrows.
Apparently players (unlike Jagex) think it's funny too:
What? You won't exchange singapore dollars??? Take this lazy banker!!!
Now who's better?
Lol - maybe the best ranged training place is at Varrock bank?
Total anarchy!!!
Bah, my mates closed doors on me lol. Well soon to get back to banker slaughter.
At this point Jagex... err... fixed the bug, that allowed us to kill bankers. At least they tried to, for that we bow to them.
Here are my stats. Every single level is gained either at tutorial island or killing bankers.
Finally I decided to pay a little visit to my friend Mod Bennet at his office. For some weird reason he didn;t think that banker slaughter fest was funny. Actually he described it in a word, that RuneScape masked with ****ed. Anyway he wasn't in a mood for talking because some less mature [link Removed]rs managed to piss him off before
Here my trip ended. Bennet came for a little moment and then disappeared. Oh well, worse for him, we could tell each other scary stories in the dark or try to figure out why we're hanging in the air and not falling (so do the dropped items
)
The Carpentry Skill
EXPAND / COLLAPSE
QUOTE
This skill was never *fully* released in Runescape Classic (though, was released in RS2. Named "construction"). For some time, it appeared on the stat window but there was no way to level it.
Andrew sometimes talked about player-owned-houses that he was trying to add to the game. At one point, he added some houses on the east side of varrock. Though, you could do nothing there. Here are some pictures:
In this picture, you can see the "Carpentry" skill. There was no way to level it. Also, you can see Zonghui achieving 99 strength.
The world map picture of the POHs.
Later on, the POHs and the inexistent skill "Carpentry" were both removed.
The She-male Bug
EXPAND / COLLAPSE
QUOTE
Using the same program that allowed the banker killing fest and the pink partyhat dupers, players found a way to use female-looking items on male characters and vice-versa. So for example, a female character would be seen with facial features only a male character would have. The following picture is a reunion of players with accounts that were shemales.
