General Support / Re: Banning members
« on: March 24, 2007, 02:44:32 am »
They'd be 'bots'/automated advertisement programs...CAPTCHA doesn't stop them from registering, I know this from over at SFD (I've had to put the place under tight security from the sheer numbers...I got about six in one day...and for a small board like mine that's a lot). They can leave their account idle for months before posting and automatically validate themselves ia email if your forum is set up to run that. About all I can suggest having experienced this myself aside from putting the forum into the same state as mine (ie. must be logged in to see anything but the first category and admin activation) is to change how members are registered to admin activation and ban bots by their email servers, some of the ones to ban listed below:

@freeemailnow.info
@sexyshare.net
@2000lv.com
@mail.ru
[anything with "hot" in it should be considered suspicious unless you know the server, and anything slightly similar to the second email listed should also be banned]
^ban those servers if you've not already done so, I've had 3 bots with freeemailnow.info as their email server bypassing IP bans...but be careful with some servers (check the hosting website in a very secure browser (as in essentially locked down) if you're not sure if a server is one with real people on it. I don't recommend banning public email hosts, but mail.ru has given me nothing but bots).

Hope this helps some

General Discussion / Re: Upgrade Question
« on: December 24, 2006, 03:05:23 am »
there's a small icon in the smaller cell of the "Forum Stats" table that looks like a small pi-graph (should there be an 'e' in there? I've not had to use the term since grade 6-7). Clicking that will take you to the stats page on SMF 1.1.*
or type http://your-forum-name.server.com/index.php?action=stats   (replace 'your-forum-name' with the target forum subdomain/first part of the URL and 'server' with either 'smfforfree', 'smfforfree2' or 'freesmfhosting' to find the stats this way)

And you're not the only one to have missed this on 1.1.* ...on a paid forum on SMF I was searching for the stats button for a good while...

In the admin panel under Board Controls, there's an option "Upgrade to SMF 1.1". By clicking this, you'll be taken to a page with a few upgrade warnings and the option to add your forum to the upgrade list. After that then you would need only to wait for the upgrade.

General Discussion / Re: How did you find SMF For Free?
« on: December 01, 2006, 07:49:12 am »
I originally used the getPHPBB host for my forum, but after being locked out of the admin panel (and the drama of creating the g-mod group) I googled for a free SMF host/server and found this place, and despite the small number of members thus far, it's more than would have registered on the original. I was also determined to not use anything invision due to a lack of options and how common they are.

Knowing that now, it occurs to me that perhaps the database is being checked to improve performance.

 That happened to me as well on any board I tried to visit, followed by "Connection Problems
Sorry, SMF For Free was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later. Support forums at http://www.smfsupport.com" more recently. Is the server down briefly for maintenance perhaps? I'm hoping it'll be repaired shortly as well.

General Support / Question
« on: November 16, 2006, 05:36:42 pm »
I saw somewhere that we are not permitted to add any advertisements to our boards/sites, but I would like to know if this includes small .gif links that 'advertise' (kinda) the source-site, like what freedomain.co.nr requires users to do. The reason I ask this is because I plan to get a domain name from said site, but I'm not 100% sure if you would count the link to the service in the footer as an ad (although the service doesn't place their own ads, nor does it request payment, it does require a link to be placed on the domain home-page, meaning the header or footer of my board).

Were I 100% sure then I'd have the link added, but as I'm not completely sure, I would like to please know as soon as possible.

Stylesheet Requests and Support / Display problem with Helios Multi
« on: November 11, 2006, 04:46:22 am »
Right, I use Helios Multi as my default theme, and it seems to be just me getting this problem. For some reason, on http://starfoxdownunder.smfforfree.com , when I try to use the Helios Multi theme I get only the borders, and the rest...well, the screenshot I took (attached) shows basically what happens when I use it. Does anyone have any idea what may be causing this, even after clearing my browser's cache, restarting my computer, doing everything I can think of to fix this? For many themes I wouldn't really worry, but since Helios Multi is my preferred theme...

If anyone is able to help me out, then thanks in advance.

General Support / Re: Posting in the Blog is a no go.
« on: November 03, 2006, 04:22:16 am »
I just checked everything a blog owner is able to do, and I got a post through with IE7, so it could be the version of browser you're using, or in an unlikely case your computer.
I can't do much but, I can offer you something that may be of assistance a) have you filled out everything in the main area? (title, post, etc.), b) is the category in the side-panel checked? I can't think of anything else, so I can only hope this helps.

 If it is indeed your browser then don't bother upgrading to IE7 final release(unless you don't usually save pages and don't need the menu bar), get Mozilla Firefox.
