btw so you know this windowbg does not control the background color of the news fader.   That area is the table border background color.

Whenever I change my windowbg color, it changes the background of my news box. Maybe that means my forum is special.  8)

you need to go back through the code line by line and make sure you didnt leave out a punctuation mark or something. Also check the img url and make sure its right.

One thing I already see is in your header code.. your missing the ">" at the end of teh word "script" at the beginning. never mind its not supposed to be there..lol

It's been resolved, Kimmie.  I first checked 'guest' in Manage Boards as you advised. And then for each board except Guest book, denied permission for unregistered guests to post.  It took a little time becoz I had to work on each board separately.  But it got done :)  Thanks again for giving so many useful guidelines.

Yeah thats another thing I dont like about the SMF forums. You have to do each board seperately.. :idiot2:

Glad you got it sorted out. If you need anything else just give a shout.  ;)

I have had that happen before. Mine was a problem with the "CTRL" button on my keyboard. Its WORN OUT..lol.

yankeesdude, there are 2 ways you can copy/paste text:

1 - Right click and click copy, then right click and click paste
2 - CTRL-C on your keyboard will copy, CTRL-V on your keyboard will paste.

Try both and see if you still have a problem.

There are 2 huge reasons why he will not allow uploading/downloading.

1. Massive Server Consumption - (as LL explained).
2. People would take advantage of it and upload/download illegal material.

Because of #2, SMF would constantly have to monitor everything that was uploaded and he doesnt have time for that.

What do we get if we upgrade to you guys, are we allowed to upload the stuff we want including smilies and such on?

Just to clarify for you, you cannot "upgrade to us". When you see people here talking about upgrading, that simply means the version of the software we are using has been upgraded to the latest release by SMF and includes updates that he has installed. He still is the only one that has complete control of installing anything on our forums such as mods, smileys, etc. Some of our members have come up with work-arounds (in the codes section) that allow you to do more with your forum than normal, but that is the only way you can make changes to it. He used to allow us to upload our own smileys but because people were starting to add ALOT of them to their forums, and the ones they would add were large in size, it put a strain on his servers and were causing problems. Right now the only thing you can do is "swap out" the ones you currently have. This allows your smileys that your using to be stored somewhere else besides his servers and puts the strain on the hosting sites servers that you are using (like PhotoBucket). He has ALOT of new things that he will be adding soon to our site like a new Portal Page so he is trying to keep a handle on whats installed so he doesnt bog his servers down because that means problems like down time which none of us want.

The issue with the forums is that if you have a board that guests can view AND post in like a guest board or "guest book" like you have, any other board that you have viewable by guests they will ALSO be allowed to post in it. I wish the settings were more specific on each individual board so you could have more control. Right now your only options are global and local which is really to broad of a setting. Maybe that will change in the future versions of the software if they see that it would benefit enough people.

Thanks Kimmie.  I went thru all those steps you mentioned.  I wasn't getting it at first but then I did.  As long as the guest membergroup permission was on 'local' it wasn't coming.  Then I tried switching it to 'global' and that worked.  Actually I thought of trying this because I have a polls board which is also open to guests and that's on global too.

Thanks again for your much needed help, kimmie :)

No problem. Glad to help, and glad you got it fixed. :)

First off, your antivirus only can detect threats that are on your actual computer. The shout box is not on your computer. Its a code that you have put on your forum and is actually applied to the SMF server so your virus program cannot scan it. It can only scan whats on your computer so the threat it detected was not from your shoutbox or any other part of your forum.

Hmmm, I get your point.  But what's surprising is .. since the last couple of days each time the anti-virus in my pc does the routine scanning, it indicates a virus threat relating to the shoutbox and scares me despite the fact that I've removed the shoutbox and also deleted the temporary internet files.

Well, there is no way your antivirus program can scan your shoutbox because its not stored on your computer. Whats the actual threat/name of the virus it gives you?

SMF For Free Codes and Support / Re: Someone plz help me add this

In order to have the Simple Machines version of the SMF software (the kind that allows you to install mods, customize more than just the stylesheet, etc), you will need to download it, purchase a domain then upload it to your domain.

To better explain the difference for everyone:

SMF For Free forums are hosted on SMF's Servers, and only he has complete control of the software. SMF is merely alllowing you to create a forum on his server and use it. You cannot install mods on the forums that SMF is hosting because you do not have access to the data files - you do not have control of the software. If something goes awry, he is the one that has to fix it.

Simple Machines forums are hosted by the individuals that download the software. You CAN install mods on the forum software that you have downloaded and host yourself because you have access to all the "behind the scenes" files/folders where everything is installed. If somethhing happens to your forum, you will have to fix it yourself.

Yes, the trademark is allowed. Basically what they are saying is that the content on their forum is copyrighted by its respective owner/poster, and cannot be reproduced by anyone without their permission, just as any other copyrighted material would be.

As for the stylesheet they are using, they probably created it themselves - all the stylesheets for SMf For Free forums are "user created". If you dont see it here:  http://www.smfsupport.com/support/stylesheet_codes_and_help/stylesheet_index_updated_102607-t2680.0.html Then you will have to ask the owner of that forum if you can use it and obtain the css code from them.

oh my bad I was taking about the post colour, so cheak any post

sorry

Your wanting to change the post color background to white? That area of your css code is the same - windowbg

/* Alternating backgrounds for posts, and several other sections of the forum. */
.windowbg
{
   color: #C3690F;
   background-color: #ECEDF3;
}

I thought I mentioned that as well in my above post but I see I didnt..lol sorry. As a reminder, changing that code will also change several other areas of your forum. There is no way to just change the post background color. Sibyl might have a work-around code.
