Title: [Guide] How to replace your Smileys
Post by: simply sibyl on April 13, 2007, 04:45:44 pm
READ FIRST!
This Guide shows you only how to REPLACE your smileys with smileys located on your Photobucket Account.
You can REPLACE the current smileys only - you cannot add more.
If you want the ability to upload smileys to your forum purchase the Custom Smiley Upgrade via Admin > Adfree & Upgrades
Do NOT use this Guide if you have purchased the Custom Smiley Upgrade
Use this Guide instead: Custom Smileys Help (http://www.smfsupport.com/support/guides_and_tutorials/guide_custom_smiles_upgrade_option-t749.0.html)

How to Replace your Smileys
This Guide will walk you through the steps to do this.   It is important that you follow every step in the Guide exactly.

IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS:
Read the TROUBLESHOOTING section at the bottom of this post and doublecheck your work before asking for support.

Step 1:

Step 2:

Step 3:

Step 4:

Step 5:

TROUBLESHOOTING:

1.  Did you name your smileys the exact same names as the existing smileys?
    (see Step 1)

2.  What address did you put in as the base url?
Do NOT put in the entire url WITH the sub album name at the end.
           a.  If your smileys are in  http://myphotobucketaccount/myname/mysmileys
then put only http://myphotobucketaccount/myname   in as the base url.

3.   Did you name the new smiley set the SAME name as the sub album the smileys are in at photobucket?
           a.  using the above example your new smiley set name would be "mysmileys"
           b.  the forum will look in  http://myphotobucketaccount/myname for the "mysmileys" subalbum

4.   Did you go to Admin > Current Theme and choose your new smiley set
(the same name as your sub album)?
     (see Step 5)

How to put your smileys back to Default
In case you decide to put your smileys back to the forum default smileys.

Admin > Smileys and Message Icons

1.  Click the Settings tab.

Default Smiley Set:     Change it to Default.

Base URL to all smiley sets:   Use http://text.smfforfree.com/Smileys for the base url.
NOTE  Replace text.smfforfree.com with YOUR forums url.
Do not leave a space at the end of it when pasting it in.
        Click Save.

2. Click the Smiley Sets tab.
Make sure there is an asterick (*) beside the Default Set.

3. Admin > Current Theme:
Select default smiley set for this theme:  Choose Default in the dropdown box.
    Click Save.

That is all there is to putting them back to default.

I don't get the second part of step 1
Title: Re: [Guide] How to replace your Smileys
Post by: clairebear on May 14, 2008, 04:16:16 am
girlylicious hun
what that means is when you upload your smilies you want to use into photobucket
you have to rename each one  to the ones that are on yoyr forum
so if you have a smilie called hug.gif rename it to the one that say
afro.gif
and then afro will become your hug smilie
that make sense?

Start all over again.  Step by painstaking step.  I hope someday SMF puts in a better system for doing those silly smiles, cause the way we have to do it now is a pain in the keister.

It really is! I cant seem to reset it though is the problem now, but i will try again

Sibyl won't be back until later in the week.  I know she knows how to do it, cause I did the same thing a long time ago and she helped me fix it.  If I saved all the "this is how you fix this" notes I would have an 80lb novel.

~Laughs!~ Well, you both, and I gramma too are a tremendous help, thank you!

When you start up a brand new forum, what is the url for the classic and default smiley sets? if i could reset it back to those i think i would be ok
Title: Re: [Guide] How to replace your Smileys
Post by: LaundryLady on May 27, 2008, 01:26:09 pm
Ok, here we go, wish us luck.

Base URL to smiley sets.

http://YOURFORUMNAME.smfforfreeYOURFORUMNUMBER.com/Smileys

One is named default and the other one is classic.

In order to find out what is going on I need to ask you to look at the Troubleshooting section in the Guide because that section contains everything I would ask you anyways so its easier to have you read that section.

It helps you with things such as the following:

Make sure you put:  http://s286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/Poketopia   as the Base Url.
Make SURE there are NO spaces before or after that url =  its important
Make sure you have Smileys set as the default smiley set
Make sure you went to Admin > Current Theme - use the dropdown box to choose Smileys as the default set
Make sure you named the smileys the exact same names.

The Base Url is your Photobucket URL.
Do NOT put the url to the album the smileys are in  (that is in the  Guide btw)

The url you need to put on that page is:
http://s286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/Poketopia

When you do the part of the Guide for setting up a new smiley set you tell it the name of the album  -  Smileys

The forum will look in the Base URL for that folder and find the smileys so long as you have them there and named correctly and they are chosen as the default set in Current Theme Settings.

I'll check back in later and see how you did with this but Im very busy offline today.   Will be on as I can.

There is no way to add more to that area, sorry.
The forums where you see more are the forums on the original server from years ago that are smfforfree (no number in the url) .   There used to be the ability to upload smileys back then.   That ability has been disabled and he has said it will not ever be re-enabled.   In a nutshell all  you can do is replace the existing ones , using the Guide.    There is a code in the Codes Index for using a little dropdown box thing to add more of your own.   You can click on them while in a post box to use them.    I realize its not the same as having them right there in the post area but its all we have at the moment.

doubleheck the filenames for the broken ones to make sure they are correct.   Filenames need to be the same as the default ones are.

Click Edit Smileys.   You can put a checkmark across from the doubles then go to the bottom and remove them.   Not sure why that happened.. havent seen it happen before  :o

If the embarrassed one is one of the ones that has a red x go to Add Smileys.. use the dropdown box.  You may have two listed there.. try each with the dropdown and one should show up then you can save that. Make sure you have it named the same where you are hosting them.   (actually you could "try" putting one by each spelling on PB and it may just work)

Put only this in as the base url:
http://s158.photobucket.com/albums/t101/junebugs_06
Then make and name the new smiley set smileys
After you have done that choose "smileys" in the dropdown box in Current Theme.

The forum will look in the base url for the folder named smileys and find them there so long as they are all named correctly and you have chosen them as the Default set.

If it is working properly now the only way you can change them would be to change them on the Photobucket account.   You would have to for instance delete afro.gif and upload a new afro.gif

rename the smileys on your computer THEN upload them to Photobucket so you dont have to go thru renaming them on there.  If you have more trouble with the guide read the Troubleshooting section near the end of it..it'll help ya

When you put your photobucket url in as the base url the forum is going to look there for the album with the smileys in it.
The default smileys can not show up at the same time.
This guide shows you how to replace those smileys... there is no way to add to them.
If you decide to put the default ones back the guide tells you near the end of it how to do so.

There IS a way to create multiple sets on your Photobucket acct....   I'll have to figure out a way to explain it so its easy to understand.    By doing so you could swap between those sets -  maybe have a christmas set, etc.   (you still can only have the same number and only one set showing at a time)

Photobucket renames files you upload if you already have one by the same name  ;)
(unless you paid for Photobucket and use ftp - then you can copy over the files)
You'll have to delete the azn.gif you already have on there before uploading the new one.

why is this such a comlicated process can you just have a browse files double click the smiley from you file upload it add a code and done?

I cant get them to work but my photobucket account is set up different

my halloween smileys are a sub-sub-sub section of my account

In other words:

Main Page - Website - Smileys - Halloween Smileys

does the code need altering since it isnt a direct sub album of photobucket?

And is there a way to add more smileys to posts if so how would you get the smiley codes ex/ :roll45:
Title: Re: [Guide] How to replace your Smileys

Because uploading smileys directly was disabled a very long time ago.   It was abused, way too many used, and it slowed the forums down.   This Guides a workaround - a way for us to be able to use different ones as its all we got.

You can do it using a sub sub sub album as you said you have.

If that "last" sub album is named "Halloween Smileys"   the url would be the url MINUS that subalbum name at the end of it.   You have to name the smiley set the same name as the sub album in order for it to work as well.

Read the Troubleshooting section of the Guide
Go thru the Guide step by step and doublecheck your settings
If that does not help leave your forum url and any imformation you can give us to help us figure out why.

This is the address of the url in photo bucket and this is what i put in... http://s442.photobucket.com/albums/qq148/secretcove/
(I also tryed it without secretcove at the end, it still produced the same thing, boxes, with the names, and a small x)

That is the username, and the name of the album, as far as I know, photo bucket didn't give me an option to name the album
anything else, I'm assuming because it is a new account?   Not another added to an existing account, could that be my problem?
Because as I stated, I have troubleshooted three different times, following it step by step, and still coming back with boxes with
the name of each smiley and a little x inside, I know I named each smiley right, because I copied and pasted the new names in?

                                                            Thanks starchildxox
Title: Re: [Guide] How to replace your Smileys

The names are not correct.
For example you have "undecidedgif.gif"      That should be "undecided.gif"    I checked several of them and they are all named that way.... need to get that first  "gif" off there.

The url.  That url is correct however the location of the smileys will not work.

The smileys have to be in a sub album, not the main album.
On the left hand side at Photobucket you should see a place to add a new album.   Type in the name for the album and click Save.   After creating it move the smileys into THAT album.
The name of that album will be the name of the new smiley set you create.

See and I thought I was so smart copying and pasting them...  Big hugs of gratitude!
                                     Thank- you!

And I will create a sub album with the correct names as well!
                                  Thanks again....  starchildxox  ::)

Ok now I'm really confused...  :o  I went to my file, in the file it only shows exactly what I copied,
such as afro.gif, I thought well maybe it's because I copied and pasted when I renamed them?  So
I right clicked renamed each smiley again such as afro.gif, went back to my photobucket album, created
a new album from that album, named the new album secrets, uploaded a smiley... and still, instead of the
smiley's name being afro.gif, it once again is afrogif.gif?

Thanks starchildxox (and sorry for being such a pain)  :(

Oh I just figured it out and it worked!  For anyone else who needs to know, if you have this same problem?
just name the simley afro. leave off the gif and photobucket then adds the gif!  Hence afro.gif!   :buck2:

Thanks starchildxox (once again.. sorry for being a pain)  ::)

When you rename them do not type in the file extension.
For instance.. when you rename afrogif.gif
Only type in:   afro
It already knows the file extension  (gif)

When you create the smiley set in Smileys and Message Icons > Smiley Sets name it:  secrets
Remember to go to Admin > Current Theme and choose "secrets" as the default set for the theme

Nevermind --- my clue has arrived :)

Admin > Smileys and Message icons > Edit Smileys
Write down the filenames you see there.
for example:afro.gif  angel.gif angry.gif  azn.gif cheesy.gif

(https://www.smfsupport.com/support/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi102.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fm105%2Fmysmileyplace%2Fsupport%2Fstep1-1.png&hash=e9e39c3b4db1e11454ddb19c8018adc8b11c3c65)

After you have written down all of the filenames rename your smileys to the same names you just wrote down.
Your new smileys MUST be named the exact same names as the smileys that exist on your forum.

Hi!  Please forgive my ignorance - but when you *say* to write down the file names....
Where do you write them down to upload to photobucket?  I am very confused on this part.  I wrote them down on a piece of paper, I wrote down on a word document - I am not sure where exactly to write the file names down to upload them - I tried just writing the filenames in photobucket - but of course that didn't work.  I am really sorry to be so confused - but I asked my husband (Mr. Unix-Guru) if he understood and of course he gave me the look of this is your territory, I don't know... Could someone please explain ?

Thank you.

1.  What did you put in as the Base Url?
2.  What did you name the smiley set?
3.  Did you choose that name (the smiley set name) in Current Theme as the default set for the theme?

You can purchase the Custom Smiley Upgrade and then be able to upload unlimited smileys.

Is there any limit to the number of smilies which can be changed using the alternative coding as per the original post?

I seem to be getting stuck on 30. If I try to change a 31st, a previously changed one drops out. :(  Hope I'm making sense! :D

Yes there is a limit  -  only because you can only replace your existing smileys.  You cannot add MORE to them.

Im not clear on what you mean by the "alternative" coding though...      Do you mean purchasing the Custom Smiley Upgrade?    With that there is no limit
Title: Re: [Guide] How to replace your Smileys

Thanks, sibyl.  Sorry, I didn't make myself clear. *blush*  I wondered if that might be the case!! *ooer*

By 'alternative coding', I meant the changes required for file path, file names being exactly the same as existing emotes, etc.  All works well except that it seems to be limiting me to 30.

Before I started updating anything, I added all available smilies in the default smiley set - there are quite a lot which aren't already added by default, e.g. babyroll.gif, BackFlip.gif, Cheers.gif, coffeedrinking.gif, etc., and wrote down ALL of their names.  At a guess, there's probably about 140 or so of them.

I've uploaded the emotes which I want to use to my Photobucket account and there's no problem with SMF finding them.  However, at this stage, I've got 32 in Photobucket, but the SMF admin section only seems to recognise 30 of them.  I've had some working fine, then, when I add another one, the previously well working one 'drops out' and returns to just text instead of an icon.

I'm well aware of the same naming issues, including usage of upper and/or lower case (I am a proofreader by occupation), so the only thing I could think of was a numerical limit to the amount of emotes available to show up on the board/in the 'more' section, hence my question about limits.

Hope this makes more sense?  ???

Oh man.
I'm going to have to leave a note to SMF for Free's Admniistrator about this.   You should not be seeing all of those smileys there at all.    It appears some of the names are showing up from some that have been uploaded by those who have the Custom Smiley Upgrade.    He's going to have the fix that again.     You should only see the normal ones - smiley - wink - cheesy - grin - angry - sad  -  to name a few.

What is your forum's url so I can let him know which server this is happening on?

If you do not wish to post the url I just need to know if its an smfforfree.com, smfforfree2.com, smfforfree3.com, smfforfree4.com, mysmf.com, or freesmfhosting.com address

I cannot afford the custom emotes upgrade as I have not long ago started my own business and am struggling to live. :(

I'll PM you my forum's URL.

Thanks for letting me know before I got any further!  ::)  :-*

You did not say where you deleted it from.

1.  If from your Photobucket account -  re-upload the smiley to your account
2.  If you deleted it from the Edit Smileys page go to the Add smileys page, use the dropdown box, find the smiley you deleted and add it back.

Number 2. Thank you, I think that worked. Also, how many smileys are we allowed to have?

Should be 22
Go to the Add Smileys page - use the dropdown box - you'll see the filenames there.
Should have the following:
afro, angel, angry, azn, cheesy, cool, cry, embarrassed, evil, grin, huh, kiss, laugh, lipsrsealed, police, rolleyes, sad, shocked, smiley, tongue, undecided, wink

You can only replace the ones that exist - you cannot add to them.
If you want more smileys you need to purchase the Custom Smiley Upgrade via Admin>Adfree&UPgrades
After purchasing the upgrade use this guide instead:  Custom Smileys Help (http://www.smfsupport.com/support/guides_and_tutorials/guide_custom_smiles_upgrade_option-t749.0.html)

I'm sorry if this is here and I overlooked it... Is there a way to add more smileys rather than just changing what exists? I have been on some smfforfree forums that had at least 50 smileys but I can't find anything to help me do that.

Is this still relevant today?  We can see the smileys but cannot put them on the forum?  I tried deleting the afro.gif with its code of 00 and putting in the crying.gif using the afro code and name and it just printed out the words crying gif.

Does this mean the free forum from SMF has us locked into the lame smileys?

I followed this [Guide] How to replace your Smileys: http://www.smfsupport.com/support/guides-and-tutorials/%28guide%29-how-to-replace-your-smileys/

I was able to load 18 of my personal smiles from photobucket to my Recipe Forum.

If you have trouble put your smileys back to Default, then start over again, it may take you a few times but just keep trying!

The the Custom Smiley Upgrade is a One time fee of $20.00 and well worth it, we have that for our Pogo Friends Forum.

Good Luck (https://www.smfsupport.com/support/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi440.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fqq128%2FOctaviampp%2FRecipe_Heaven%2Flipsrsealed.gif&hash=599011279c2fecfdde6e557161f23685e2548b9a)
