[Guide] How to avoid the Advertisers

As you all might know, the forums of Unscape this might happen to frugooscape Or Any Other Forums too are getting more and more bots, that advertise for illigal companies on the Internet.

There barely is fighting to it, if they really want to overload the forums with their advertisements, then they can.

The most common products that they advertise are Medicine and stuff like Garden Tools. If you buy this, the chances that you buy a false non-working product is at 99,79 percent (yes, this comes from an official test).

They use cheap ingredients for the medicine, making its value about 10 times lower then they sell it for. The only place you should by medicine at is the local hospital and/or apothecary. Make sure you know that those are qualified people, with permission from the government to sell medicine. There is 1 piece of advice:

NEVER BUY THESE PRODUCTS ON THE INTERNET!
If you see an advertiser on the forums, report them to a Mod, or even better an Admin, immidiatly.

A way to prevent these advertisers from spamming more, is to have an up-to-date Virus Scanner. Because they don't just use their own computers, they might just be using yours! These illigal companies buy email adresses at a so-called E-mail Collector, which they use to register at forums with, Giving them the ability to post their ads at our forums aswell. The Captcha can hold off alot, but not everything, since some of these advertisers already have some sort of image reader. This gives them the ability to enter the letters in the Captcha correctly, granting them acces to the forums.

The reason why you should have a good virus scanner is because these advertisers do not just buy e-mail adresses. They can also rent home-computers, like mine and yours. The ones they rent have an infection of a small virus, giving them the ability to send thousands of spam messages a minute, which adds up to millions of messages a day. In 2008, the record of spam messages sent over the world in 1 day, was 38,238,172,969(note: that is over 38 BILLION!)
You might have noticed, you get alot of advertising from your friends on msn, saying you should buy this or rent that. These computers of your friends are infected with the same virus as the one that I'm telling you about. Did you know that 65 of the 100 emails recieved, are spams from advertisers? If everybody was able to convince 10 other people not to buy these products, then it would be over within a month. Because they only have to sell 1 product in 100,000 messages, and they already have a profit. Some of these illigal companies earn hundreds of millions of Dollars a year. And the advertisers dozens of millions.

If they get caught, however, it will be seen as a federal crime, and dealt with appropiatly.

So, to prevent advertisers:
Make sure you have an up-to-date virus scanner, which is working functionally;
NEVER buy any products from these companies;
Don't respond to those ads in your e-mail inbox either, even if they come from friends' adresses;
If you see any advertisers on whatever forum you're on, report them immidiatly;
Ask your msn friends if they are recieving these spam messages from your e-mail, if they do, then you should get a better virus scanner.
I hope this guide helps you all, place your comments. If mods or admins know anything to add to the list, feel free to add it.

There are many helpful threads here about dealing with these things
Dealing with Spam

Just to add:

If i remember correctly, there are some of these advertisements that don't even have actual products attached to them. The purpose is just as a disguise in order to infect your computer with a virus.

But the MSN and email virus you were talking about it actually a worm. What it does is it attaches to your buddy list or address book, and send itself out to all of your friends. Then once it's on your friend's list it goes after all of their buddy lists/address book. And the cycle keeps going. Then as the worm is reproducing across the web it might be (depending on it's purpose) tunneling it's way into your private information.

As with most things on the web you should never click it or open it unless you know for sure that you know one of your friends sent it. It also helps to have a good, active virus protection program in use at all times just in case. Even if it looks like someone you know sent it, there are (and have been) viruses out there that send out emails from people's account in order to disguise the virus.

However, back to the advertisers, most of them use bots in order to go across numerous forums within seconds. By the time you see some of these advertisements on your forum they are already gone. So just report, delete, and ban. Not much else you can do about it.

But there is just one thing i want to correct on here. These spam advertisers don't get paid per click. They get paid on how many messages they can put on forums. So just not clicking on it won't affect them in any way, since they still get paid.

These spambots are the thorn in our side when we surf the net, but sadly not much can be done. We just got to deal with it, and not let it affect us or just try better to prevent it. We just got to learn from it. If users see that their admin is diligent in preventing spam then they will have more confidence that their forum will be a better place to spend their time.
