Just one person in your case removes the censors and the ads.

Forever? Like a one time payment?

No not a one time payment it is tied to ad free credits so depends on how busy your board is.

is there a way to better impliment the censor?

Our site already extensively uses the built in censor feature of the boards to replace bad words.  We went to great lengths to add each word or variation so it didn't affect legitimate uses of words.  And now this new censor overrides our censor and cause legitimate uses of words to be censored.  For instance my site is a gaming site.  Hard*core mode is a common mode of gameplay in call of duty.  Yet that word, that isn't bad at all, is now censored and we can't discuss certain game modes.  It was already mentioned that D*ick Van Dyke is censored, yet this isn't a bad word use either.

Please put a better censor in place to eliminate such ridiculous censoring of legitimate words.  And don't give me the garbage that it has to be that way.  I know for a fact it doesn't.  I took the time to make the censor work properly, so with some effort, you can too.

Totally over the top when legitimate words like n u d e and the c o c k in Hitchc o c k are replaced with asterisks.

Anyways it's had the effect y'all desired and has forced me to shell out money to get rid of those adverts. I hope it happens soon and my forum is back to being as adult as I'd like it to be. >:(

This was not a ploy to get SMF more money. It was something the advertisements put out that said it's against THEIR terms to use such words.

Yes, I'm aware that some words are a little over the top because they are used in other words. I wish there were another way around it, but unfortunately this is the way it is. It's important to remember that if those advertisements weren't in place, this service could no longer exist. And if this service didn't exist you would have to shell out even MORE money to pay for forum hosting.

There are loads of stupid ones in this that just aren't applicable in the UK. For instance, we have a town over here called Scunthorpe. You can't write that. It's making it difficult to read things as half of the words & lets be honest most of these words are harmless and not at all offensive, have been blanked out. I've got members complaining to me that their posts have all been changed. The word g.amble has even been censored! When talking about a sports team (which is what my forum is about) quite often people will discuss whether its worth the g.amble to change formation/players/tactics etc. It's currently just madness.

the general feeling at my forum is to find a new host who doesn't put a price on censorship. Advertisers or not, the bottom line is that we signed up for the site under the idea of having a place to speak freely, not have our posts changed because an advertiser has decided that our thoughts don't mesh with their "policies". No one on our forum is under 30, we've all heard and said worse, we should have the option to censor or not based on wether people are offended or not, not advertiser policies. I guess this is just further proof that corporate america makes all the rules and the rest of us are just sc rew ed.

The only thing you can do is buy the ad free credits. The censored words policy is a necessary step for the advertisements.

My little (18 members) hidden closed (as in, only invited members, not open to new posters) forum of 50+-year-old mothers of college-aged children needs a censor, does it? That's what the advertisers are saying? We need to be censored so they can grace us with their ads??

I doubt it. I'm sorry. Companies advertise on the venues that they think can deliver them customers. Advertisers court the customer base, not the other way around. If they want to censor a bunch of college moms, to stop them from typing c o c k t a i l and p u s s y c a t, for example, so that we can see their advertisements, they have just assured themselves that I will never become one of their customers.

If what you say is true -- that this requirement came from your advertisers -- your advertisers have ticked off its huge advertising base, the very people they are hoping will buy their products! Forum participants don't like having their posts made unreadable.

If the imposition of extremely badly implemented censor software was demanded by the advertisers, that was an incredibly short-sighted move on their part. So I'm having a little trouble accepting that that is the reason for the censor. Sorry.

But hey, if that is the real reason, I'll be letting the women in my college moms forum -- and people in every other SMF forum I run or participate in -- know that the advertisers are responsible for the censorship. I'm sure that will endear the advertisers to the participants, and that participants will line right up to click on the ads and buy the products and services being hawked. (Not!)
