You need to go to admin>FORUM tab>smileys and message icons > settings > and then check "Enable customised message icons"

Nutz - Not all images under Customize Images can be changed.   
The post icons are some that cannot (yet) be changed which is why you can not change them.

Yeah,I tried feverishly yet failed,which explains alot. My only dislike for the post icons are the generic looking exclamation and question mark.

you "could" if you really want to change them use webworldx's image swapper:
