what if i move? (mysmf)
« on: February 27, 2008, 01:32:58 am »
If i do move as our server is extrmemly slow alot and giving us grief, if we go to another one of your forums like smfforfree4 ect ,  our forum would then be www.teardrop.smforfree4.com which is major long , but we can do that direct thing cant we like www.teardrop.co.nr or whatever it is?
If thats easy to do..
I was thinking we could build the new forum on the side , so it is ready , then make each and every 141 member , that will grow in meantime lol ,  and as them copy and paste every single post , all 1285 of them ,  and put pics in gallery ect , take a good while about two or threee weeks maybe longer , then once it is set up, if our mysmf is still slow and playing us up we can go right over by emailing each and every member with new td new pw and tell them they can change it when over ...
but i was wondering to make this easier , if we decide to do it as it is a lot of work ...is there such thing as a redirecting page? so when old members who maybe missed the email come to td they get redirected?
thanks#

When I moved mine I first sent a bulk email to all the members inside the site that I had moved the site then hid all the boards but one with the new link so when they came back to the old site only thing they could see was the post with the new link and posted that we had moved on there. (just incase they did not get the email from inside the site inside their email) Took awhile for the last one to finally find us but it worked.

Goodluck in getting things working for your forum. :)

Once you finish moving, you can set it so the old forum would show them a message and then automatically send them to the new site.

clair you could also remove all of the portal blocks , make one block.    Put a notice of the move,  along with a link to the new site on the block so they will instantly know you have moved.

OR you could put the forum into Maintenance Mode.
The screen they get when they go there could tell them you have moved, and have the new url on it.

Or if you do want to go the redirect route you could use this:   (it goes in your header)
This one is an html redirect instead of javascript.   These days a lot of people disable javascript in their browsers so this way it will work for everyone.

   <meta HTTP-EQUIV="REFRESH" content="0; url=http://www.yourdomain.com/index.html">

content="0"   ....    The 0 makes it redirect immediately.
Change the "0" to the number of seconds you want it to wait if necessary.
Replace the url with your new url.

Keep in mind that once you do this it'll redirect YOU as well so make sure you are ready to have it do it.     (there's a way to clear your header though if needbe)

Signups are all on server 4.
There IS no server 5 yet.  :)
Add free credits:   I believe they go by your forum url.
You could ask SMF about this as the reason for your move is due to the problems with your mysmf service he "may" take care of that for you on the new forum  (I dont know.. cannot speak for him hon)

Yes you could use co.nr or another service.

forgot something ;)
If you are paying monthly for ad free credits you will need to make him aware of the new address so that the credits do not continue to be applied to the old one.

so where would i need to go to get a smfforfree4 forum from then? lol
then when me n tina have the time we will build it up slowly like i said first post ...then when all ready move all over ..
if thats ok n no breaking any rules? it wont be a working forum til everything is done on move over ...i need to make it as painless as possible for my members,
for my forum to be ready to use it will need every memebr moved over by me n tna , every post pasted n copied , every pic added in gallery , the board and styleshhet ect in, the permissions n member groups set up again and private boards , the portel settings , and finally the domain changed over so it nice n short lol
so thats gonna take a while lol
and if smf for free guy read this :D,  would it be  possible to , whilst im building the new forum , that be adds on it , but when we move over, can u change it so the adds free i pay on my forum just follow us to new forum?
if not would i have to cancel the paypal i do already n start again?
thanks

Since this will take some time I would leave it as it is for right now.  Then when you are getting ready to use the new one let SMF know you have moved to a new url.    (cancelling paypal, starting over, may be the way to go)

ok thanks , one last worry lol

mysmf is slow , so i was advised to move to smforfree4 cuz it faster , in time will this forum become old and then slow ,
i read alot of smforfree getting new stuff that we dont have , is that cuz we r an old server or summit?
will this happen in the future with smforfree4 in time when new ones open?
lol sorry

clair.   the new servers are created as the older ones get filled up.  It doesnt mean they are "old"  it means they are getting filled so to take the load off new servers are made for all new signups.

Currently SMF is installing new options on Server 4 as a way of making sure they work correctly before putting them on all of the other servers.    The new features that are on server 4 WILL be added to the previous servers...  timeframe unknown to me.   I would assume in the future when/if new servers are added all current features will be included.    Keep in mind he does have to add them himself.
