I'm confused, they must work differently than v1 because I have no idea how to upload one.

You cannot upload new smilies on smfforfree2
About the only thing you could do is to get some file hosting someplace (like photobucket).   Upload the smileys you want to use there.  They will have to have the exact same file names as the smilies that exist on the forum now.    Change the base url for your smilies to your file hosts address and it will use those instead.

Is there a side by side comparison of the features for the two different versions of SMF used here? I'm confused with the changes. The upgrade link in the ACP only lists one feature change and that's for the arcade yet it seems that the changes are far more complex and I'm beginning to wonder if I should just keep my current version instead of upgrading.

As SMF said ya might wanna create one so you can look all thru it and see the changes.  THere are numerous ones.
The Admin Panel has had a major overhaul.   Everything is there, plus more,  but its in different spots that after some working with it for awhile makes sense.

Some of the things that are different are:

The child boards show totals on the main board   (setting in admin panel needs to be checked to enable that)
The arcade has been updated    (will need to reinstall the games but its easy enuf to do)
The calendar has changed.  You can now add events without having to link them to a post
You can manage Holidays - add your own, or country specific ones.   works slick!
There is a buddy system.    Members (if you enable it) can add other members to their buddy list.     Ive not used
it much but I think it would be a help for those that use the pm system alot.

You can enable reporting of personal messages.  Plus some other pm settings:
can set the maximum number of recipients allowed in a personal message.
can set the post count under which users must enter code when sending personal messages.
can set number of personal messages a user may send in an hour.

SMF has fixed it so that we can change a LOT of the graphic elements to the forum's style...    can be done thru Manage Styles/Customize Images tab

There is only ONE Theme, the core theme,  but there are many styles to choose from and you can edit the style a lot to make it look as you like.

It does include the Staff List and Gallery.

Some things it does not have that server 1 does..   no portal , and you cannot upload your own smileys (although there is a slight workaround mentioned earlier in this thread)  It DOES work,  Ive tried it on my own site.

well that is just a few things.. that i can remember off the top of my head

I'm starting to miss the old ones, these ones don't have anything fun in them, no points system, no smilies, what's the fun in that?

Ha, sounds like you want me to make that chart.  :2funny:

Thank you coke. I think I will accept that as advice to stay with ver 1.0.10.

I'm lost, you're going to need to explain a bit more.

How to replace smileys in SMF 1.1.2

First you need to have an understanding on how it works.
You cannot upload new smileys, nor add new smileys.

You can replace the existing smileys with smileys of your
own or smileys you have permission to use.  Most smiley
artists will allow you to use them in a forum if you ask.

You will need to rename your smileys to the exact same filenames
as the existing default smileys.   An easy way to find the filenames
is to go into your Admin Panel,  Smileys and Message Icons.

Write down the filenames you need to use.
(or keep the window open as you work on your smileys in another window)

Collect your smileys;  rename them to the same names that you earlier wrote down.

Now you need a host for your smileys.
Photobucket works very well for this.
Use your exisiting Photobucket acct, or make one if you do not have one.

Once at Photobucket make an album to place your smilies in.
If you are using your own personal webspace create a folder.

Upload the smileys into the album/folder.

Go back to your forum.  Admin Panel/Smileys, and Message Icons.

Click on the Smiley Sets Tab.
Click on the New Smiley Set Button.
In the Name box put the name of the album you created at Photobucket.
In the url box put the exact same name.
Check mark the Default Smiley Set box.
Click Save Changes.

go to the Settings tab.
In the box for Base url put your photobucket address.  Leave OFF the
album name.    It only needs to know your address at Photobucket.
click Save Changes.
go back into settings again and this time using the dropdown box
choose the smileyset   (the name of the album you created)

Back to the Menu on the Left.
Click on Current Theme
Select default smiley set for this theme :    Choose your new smiley set

You can now go back to the smileys and message icons area,  click on the edit smileys tab and be sure your smileys are showing up.

so I am sure that he would let us all know  ;)

That would be the address you would put as the base url,  yes.
But it is going to look for the folder (sub album)  name for the smileys so make a sub album named Default and upload the smileys into that sub album.   Make sure to choose the Default Smileys as the default for your forum.

If you were to choose "custom" instead -    you would make a sub album named "custom"         It would look to your ... greencap album for the sub album custom

I'm lost, you're going to need to explain a bit more.

it has been a little while since I did this so I hope I get this right.

There are several steps to it but once you figure out how it works its not too bad.
This is how I did it   (no directions so I winged it, but it worked)

Go to Admin Panel
Go to Smileys and Message Icons

write down all the filenames of the smileys.

You will only be replacing those smileys,  not adding to them and you need to use the same filenames in order for this to work.   Again, you can only replace those that are there, not add extra nor change filenames.

So in other words.  You will be replacing:

angry.gif
cool.gif
cry.gif
evil.gif
rolleyes.gif
sad.gif
ect..  with your OWN smileys named exactly the same names

Get your smileys together and upload them to a file hosting service.
I used Photobucket and its working fine.

Make a folder at Photobucket called default and upload all the smileys into that folder.

Get the address for your photobucket acct  (leave off the default at the end of the address)

In your admin panel click on the smileys and message icons section
Click on the Settings tab

In the dropdown box choose Default
In the box for the Base Url put the address for your Photobucket acct where the smileys
reside  (or wherever the file host service you used is located)

AGAIN:   do NOT include the "default" at the end of the url.   If you are using Photobucket the
url you will put there will end with the name of your photobucket acct;  no slash at the end.

Click Save Changes.
Go to Edit Smileys to see that your smileys are there.

lastly..  good luck  ;)

i checked out your forum and you have lots  of smileys there. again, where in photobucket did you get that?!
