I also have announced the topic, but I have yet to receive the announcement in my own email.

As Admin I do not think you will receive it.
You will if you have a test member account set up with a different email address..
I have two accounts on my forum..  one as simply sibyl.. one as my real name..
I recieved the notice for my normal email acct (the one that is for the member with my real name)

You will still have to wait for the dns to update on your own computer , whether you use a custom domain name or not.

Your computer stores the sites DNS information in its cache when it visits it for the first time.
Since the forums are being moved, the dns information will change.
It will take time for your own computer to update the DNS.
Until that time you will be unable to access the forum. The timeframe is not exact.  For some of you, you may be able to access your forum sooner.  For some of you it could take your system longer to update the DNS.  It could take 24 to 48 hours.

don't change the nameserver IP information with your domain host until AFTER your forum is moved btw

But once the changes have been done you could clear your Cache which might allow u access sooner.

Would that work ?

Clearing your browsers cache will not flush the dns and update it.

You can try to flush it manually however it does not always work.

Start > Run >  type in cmd.exe
Type in:    ipconfig /flushdns

k. well when i changed the nameserver stuff before for my domain i was given 2 dif nameservers to give my domains host. in the red alert we were only given 1 ip addy. what am i suppossed to give to them?

also, what changes may occur w/ doing this switch over for our forums, will have have the risk of more glitches again? how will our forums appear? and what risks are there?

i am familiar w/ some issues where files can become lost while servers switch around, will our forums be backed up prior to moving them?

I feel sure he will do a backup before he moves them.
There are always risks of errors but this should go smoothly.
He has already tested the new equiptment and moved another hosting service he owns to it and it works great.
Your forum is going to look exactly as it does now.   This is only a move to another server.   The software is not being upgraded, no new features are being added.   It is just being put on a different server.
All you need to do is update the nameservers with that IP number that is on your forum announcement after the forum is moved.
That IP applys to both nameservers.

If you are using a custom domain name, purchased a domain, and parked it on smf for free, then  after the forum is moved you will need to change the IP for the nameservers. You would do that at your domain host (where you purchased the domain name)

If you are not then ignore that part of the message.

Its for only if you use a domain like www.example.com if you don't have a domain like that then ignore that part. But don't mess with the domain manager if you don't host a domain.

Correct.   Just remember that your forum will be moved according to the schedule as listed in the Announcement here, and on the System Downtime notice on your forum.

Any chance we can ask to have the banner with the downtime notice removed from our forum?

If not, no big deal....
