Hi, ya....do we know about what time the forums will be down?  Just wondering because I have things that are scheduled at certain times and would like to prepare for the downtime.  Thanks!

It will be around about at night don't know what country though but when you login as admin on your forum it says in a red note at the top and SMF said it would take 1-2 days to be back up and running.

There is a notice on your forum telling you the date your forum will be moved.
You must be logged in as Administrator to see the notice.

Once the forum is moved it can take up to 24 hours for the dns to update on your own computer.
This is normal.   During the move, and until the dns updates you will not be able to access your forum.

For Custom Domain Users only:
IF you bought a domain you willl need to go to your domain host and update the nameservers IP.
The new IP number is on your forum in the announcement there.   Do NOT do this until after your forum is moved.

If our Forum doesn't have a web hoster, are we still going to update?

Yes that is where I saw it, was just wondering if SMF had a time that this will start on May 11th for our forum?

All forums, on all the servers, are being moved.

rileyks -   No.    If it says in the evening in your notice on your forum it will be sometime that evening.  We do not have a specific time for you.

iBella if you are not using a custom domain name, purchased one, set it up in the domain manager, then ignore the part of the announcement about the nameservers and changing the IP.    That part of it will not apply to you and is only for those who have previously done so.

All forums are being moved to new servers, new hardware.    This effects your forum too.

So is this move being done because of the troubles lately? And any idea how long the move will take?

@SMF...I think it is a wise decision for this move. Even though we will experience a downtime, it will be worth it. Shows how much you care about the speed and reliability of this service  ;)

He has purchased new hardware.  Forums will have a new database server.  SMF will have more control over all of it himself.    Each server move will take some time on the evening it is scheduled.   How much time I cannot say, do not know...  will need to be patient and realize this is a GOOD thing.  Since they are being moved to a new server you will need to also wait for the dns to change on your own computer after the move.    That can take up to 24 hours and sometimes even longer.  (up to 48)   Very normal.

24 to 48 is an approximation and can not be helped.
This is going to be much better for the forums and is worth the little bit of time that they will be unaccessable.

It will take time for the server move itself.
Then after the move it can take 24 hours for the DNS to update on your computer.
This is NORMAL and in some cases (for some of you) it could take even longer then 24 hours.

Your computer stores the sites DNS information in its cache when it visits it for the first time.
If the DNS changes since your last visit it can 24 hours (or longer) for it to change on your computer.
