Server 1 is very slow

we are getting the white screen of death every time we submit a post.

I would either upgrade to 1.1 or get rid of custom smiles if you are using them.

i don't really understand your reply smf. the forum has been ok for a few weeks now, it's just today it's been playing up.

anyway, the forum is down altogether now.  :(

That's part of the issue. If its only during posting then its mostly like the smiles since there are a lot.

the forum is back up now.

it isn't just during posting though smf. it's slow when we're just browsing at times too.

it has been fine for a few weeks now.

and with just going down like that, wondered if there was a server problem?

to let you know the forum is back up and seems to be fine now.

this is why i don't understand why it's a smilie issue.  it works perfectly fine at times and the smilies are there if it's slow or not.

anyway everything seems to be ok for now thanks.

The smilies require a lot of bandwidth. They'll still be shown if they are the problem...however the server is working hard to do so.

the forum is erratic again tonight.  it's been fine all day, no problem at all. but from 9.30 tonight onwards it's been slow, white screen and so on. the same happened at the same time last night.

are backups being done or something?

Okay...so I deleted over half of our smileys...shrunk our banner down...and we are still getting the white screen of death on a pretty regular basis. 

I get that I can delete all of the smileys...and remove our banner...and upgrade to 1.1 and lose our theme...but, I don't understand why I have to. I donated money to a new server so that things would be better for everyone...but it seems as if the server ran better before everyone upgraded and moved to server 2...

Please help me understand why I can't just have a forum that runs relatively smoothly?

*edited to add...Can I help assist in some way in removing/reporting forums that are old and just taking up space?  Wouldn't that help with things running more smoothly?  For example.... http://foundationfb.smfforfree.com/  ...hasn't had a new post since September of 2006...

I need to know when that white screen is coming ie what action you are doing? Trying to post? Hitting the reply button etc.

My mistakes were having more than one theme and allowing people to upload smiles. I fixed that with the recent versions of SMF For Free.

Personally...I get the white screen of death when replying to posts...but often times, I get it when I try to log into the forum. 

...and like I said, I would be more than happy to offer to go through the list of forums on server one and find those which are not being used and just taking up space...   ;)

It's not so much the memory space, but the bandwidth. While your plan is an extremely generous offer the forums that are not being used aren't using up any bandwidth.
The server only has to work to process in use forums and when the load is too high it slows down like this.
Really generous offer though :)

Ah...I see!  I don't know much about that kinda stuff...so, thanks for filling me in! 
I can still go through and identify some for cleaning purposes though (yeah, Imma little OCD) if necessary!

Well, I believe SMF has an automatic pruner that can take out old forums easily.

However if you wanted you could find forums that violates the Terms of Service. Plus if a forum violates the TOS and is being used at the time it would cut down on bandwidth...just a little but it would do something.

Seriously...this is getting a bit outta hand.  We have no more smileys there than you do here....and yet, I get a daily email saying there is a problem with the database...and currently, the white screen of death issue is occurring at least twice a day when I try to post...

I just have a feeling that server 1 is being neglected and those who choose to abandon their whole style/theme to go with blah 1.1 are being updated and taken care of.  I run the #3 board of all the forums, and yet, we still have continuous problems...

Sorry if I sound bitchy...but I am annoyed.
