Problem with one member on notifications.
« on: August 19, 2009, 07:06:30 pm »
I have a single member who uses MSN for his email. He is not getting notifications for post replies, PM, etc. I've searched, and all settings/recommended things to try I've found on this topic are not working. I've had him check his junk folders and filters to no avail. All other members (non MSN users) that have chosen to be notified, are.
Any suggestions, aside from telling the member to use a different mail service?

Thanks Andrew. I was thinking along those lines, as this is the only member who uses MSN, and also the only member who has issues.
Can any staff offer up any solution or fix? Seems strange that my board notification would limit MSN users.

Im afraid Andrew is correct ercnan..   MSN/Hotmail accounts seem to rarely receive notifications.    This is an issue with MSN, not the forum software.   Afraid it would be best to suggest they use another email address - possibly gmail - it recieves them just fine.

Thanks sibyl, I use gmail as well. That's what threw me since his settings are the same as mine after I changed his. Not that I doubted Andrew, just thought there might a solution someone knew about that was not posted yet.
Thanks to you both for the replies and info. I'll let the member know.

Well it seems I pooched myself on this. I use Thunderbird as a local client to retrieve all my web mail. I created an auto forward filter to auto forward all replies to me from my board to the member in question as well. Now, even though I've deleted that filter, the member is still getting the forwards. I know, it's a Thunderbird issue. I'm just posting here in hopes that something can be looked into on the msn/hotmail/smf for free incompatibility issue. I'm trying to accommodate a member who has no issues on other sites (phpbb, ipb, vbulletin, etc.) getting notifications through msn, so I'm not really clear as to why a simple "msn does not play well with smf for free for some reason" seems to be the end of the issue.

Sorry if I sound a little peeved, but I am at the moment. Spending my time trying to work around the problem to keep a member is not good for me. Telling the member his mail "does not work with software for some reason" is lame, and will, in all likelihood, cost his membership, no matter what I've tried.

Its not a msn/hotmail/smf for free compatibility issue.   Hotmail/msn has a habit of filtering mail from unsolicited sites.  Yahoo has been known to do the same.   I use Gmail.  Until I got it setup properly it was sending them all to my spam folder.

The only thing I know to tell you is to tell the member to go all thru thier MSN email account settings and make sure that the they have it set that your forum is one they want to receive mail from.    They also need to thoroughly check their filters, spam folder, etc.

My apologies sibyl, that was a bit out of line (my last) for here. I was a bit steamed, but that's no excuse.

I've told the member to check his settings and he says everything is correct, maybe they are, maybe not, dunno.
He also said he contacted msn and they don't know what he's talking about.

At any rate, I've told him my only other suggestion is to open a gmail account. We'll see.
