Post Counts
« on: July 01, 2007, 03:27:09 pm »
Hi everyone !!! I'm looking for a lil advice.

I'm trying to figure out which way I could do this so that it might work like I would like it .. I'm just not sure it's possible. On our forum, members post a lot of images and things from their photobucket accounts. At some point in time they would like to delete them off their accounts. If they do .. you get the dreaded red xs all over the forum. We would like to remove these threads periodically so that we avoid this problem. So if we do our clean up periodically, send them to a graveyard, we would still have the same problem with the dreaded red xs. And it is my understanding that the dreaded red xs all over can cause problems in slow downs on the forums.

If we just delete the threads right off the board without using a graveyard, members post counts go down.

The ideal question is, is there a way to delete the threads right off the board without members post counts going down ? If not .. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :)

Create a board that noone but admins can see (I called mine "The Dump"  ;D) and move the threads there. Your overall forum stats for posts will remain the same, and the post count of your members who originally posted them will remain intact.

But won't I encounter the problems of slow down on the forum once the members start deleting images that are included in those posts ? I have been told over and over again that red xs for images over the forum creates slowdowns.

Wouldn't this affect that section too ?

We already have this type of "graveyard" on the other forum where I am Admin .. so I'm familiar with it .. but just worried about the effect of the images being removed.

well since the board would be vuable only to admins, then no1 would open it, so it wouldn't lag it.

EDIT: another option would be for u to manually edit every post where images have been deleted and remove the image tags, links, and attachments, so that it doesnt lag. of course this is the more hard working solution, but it would ensure keeping every1s post count and not having the image problem without graveyard board.

No, moving those posts wont change the speed your forum loads. And no, the loading of those little red x's wont cause your forum to load slow either. It takes less time to load those than loading the actual image that was there. IF you have them on aboard that noone can see but you, the only time those images/red x's  will actually be loaded up is when you access that board.

Ok ... update lol.

Here is what I have done .. I did make a graveyard .. and made it on Admin board as recommended. Now I still have a problem lol.

If I move a topic to the graveyard all is good in the world and post counts remain the same. But if I delete individual posts within a topic, they go to graveyard but post counts go down. Unfortunately I don't always have the luxury of being able to move a whole topic to the graveyard and sometimes need to pick and choose specific posts.

Any ideas anyone .. this sort of defeats the purpose of me having the graveyard in the first place lol.

Unfortunately, you can only "move" entire threads. If you want the post count to stay intact just edit the post and remove the image code. If the posts are all in one area of the foruml, you can always make someone a moderator of that section and ONLY give them permission to modify posts - that way they can keep up the maintenance on it for you. You have the ability to monitor any moderators actions so you can keep an eye on them.

You can split posts out of a thread and move them elsewhere.

Yes, you can also do that. I had actually forgotten about it due to the fact, I never have the need to use it on my own forum. Thanks for sharing that suggestion. :)
