Non-working Smilies in posts.
« on: November 13, 2008, 04:02:10 pm »
Forum Url: http://grinsngiggles.smfforfree4.com
Before I am asked if I followed the directions, let me say that I did .. and I am 100% sure that I did it properly, because I've done this only 20 times before now. LOL And yes, I also read the trouble shooting. ;) Still no help. So ... although I know the scripted questions will commence anyways, I just wanted to get that out there.

I followed this guide and instead of getting anything, I get absolutely nothing. There are NO smilies what so ever that come up. I checked my photo bucket account, the URL, the name of the album and so forth to make sure there were no typos (even though I copied and pasted), and nothing is changed. I have used the Current Theme step as well to select the smilies I want to use, etc...

I also tried going back and restoring to default, by placing the URL: http://grinsngiggles.smfforfree4.com/Smileys into the URL area and you know what? NOTHING! LOL I get nothing. No defaults. No classics. No smiles at all. Now, I used all those steps listed in the guide just a couple of weeks ago, and they worked fine. Nothing in my photo bucket account was moved or renamed. I double checked the file names to be sure those weren't screwy. They are fine. I was going to add some Thanksgiving Smilies and couldn't get them to show up. So I gave up and was going to restore the smilies back to the ones we were using - again ... couldn't get them to go back. So then I tried restoring to default ... again ... no luck. So, knowing the steps in and out .. and having successfully added these for three forums ... suddenly, it's just not working? Something isn't right.

In the midst of the small changes here and there being done with SMF, did something happen with the smiles along the way or is my forum just bugging right now?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

(Edited to add: I should also add that this problem happened at the very time that SMF servers 3 and 4 went down on Monday night. I was in the middle of working on this when I noticed they stopped working and since have not come back to working order for me).

lol sorry.. I know it sometimes sounds like we do scripted responses to this one but its quicker, easier sometimes to have you guys check the troubleshooting then to ask each step that is in it.     To answer the last part of your question:  I use them from my Photobucket acct on 3 of my forums and they are all working fine so I don't believe that is the issue.    Just checked on my forums on 3 and 4 to be sure -  yep they are there.

One thing I would like you to doublecheck (and EyeSpy Im very aware you know what you are doing)  but give this a looksee.    Check the Base url one more time for me and make SURE there are no spaces either before or after it.    Also can ya give me the url you did put in there as well as what you named the new set please?

Trust me, I completely understand the need to ask those obvious questions. I have to do that daily (and it's not fun LOL). It can easily make a person  :uglystupid2: in the brain. So that wasn't a smarty pants comment, LOL. Just me trying to point out that I'm not an amateur to the scene. LOL

I double checked and no spaces. I did notice about a week ago that Photobucket was breaking links that included the <a href=  code in them. So I had to manually go in and remove each <a href code and leave only the <img src= code. Then the pictures started working again.

The Base URL I am using is: http://s478.photobucket.com/albums/rr149/grinsngiggles (I left off the / because when you add it, it adds two // to the base URL that I noticed). The album name is GnGSmiles. No spaces, no dashes, or funky characters. The new set is named GnGSmiles and the files of each smiley is exactly what the original (default) files are named. I didn't change the file names at all for any of them.

Thanks for the assistance, once again, sibyl. LOL This problem is certainly making me bonkers. I had to go sit down and have a drink after banging my head on the keyboard in frustration. LOL I kept saying to myself, "OK .... Steph .. you had this working last week. What now?"  :D

I just swiped your base url to give it a shot on my server 4 test forum .. it works.

But put the Base url like this:

http://s478.photobucket.com/albums/rr149/grinsngiggles/

Yep - leave the slash there.

Check the smiley sets tab and make sure the GNGSmiles set is starred as the Default too.

It'll work without the slash too..     just took it off.. smileys are all there..
If needbe do a screenshot of the smiley sets page so we can see what the url looks like there.

No rush ... My internet connection is being wacky, so I'm not even certain I can get back in tonight to check on replies. LOL Just been a WONDERFUL week so far. Blah!

Leaving the slash at the end in:

The result:  (Notice how there are two slashes?)

So I took it back out again:

And got this:

Then I go here and select the album name and click Save:

And either way I do (with double slashes and without) this is the result I get:  (Notice ... no smilies)

humm should at least show red x's
Your settings are identical to mine.. mine are working just fine.
Checked Edit Smileys and made sure none are set to hidden?
Any show up in there at all?
If not go to Add Smileys..    choose one in the drop down.. does it show up?

Might hafta ask SMF to take a peek and see if something is up over there

There is nothing that shows up in the Edit area. In the Add area, if I click on one in the drop down menu, the one I pick shows up. I have nothing selected to hide either. It's all show on post options.

I figured this has to be a bug issue because I've done everything I know of to fix this one, and well ... I'm stumped. LOL! Leave it to me to break something inadvertantly, right?  ;D

Go back to Add Smileys and add one of them.
Put in a code, and a tooltip for it, choose Post Form for Location then click save changes.
Check Edit smileys to see if it shows up (also do a reply to a post to check)
If it does you know what to do from there -  go back  and Add the rest.

If this does not do it for ya...  Im stumped

:o Well call me Sally and slap me with a rubber hose. That did it. Them not being inside of the Edit field was causing them to act like they weren't even there. What a P.I.T.A. that was and all to find such a simply stupid resolution. UGH! :tickedoff: Okay ... well, at least it's resolved. Thanks so much sibyl. That was genius and yet at the same time, I am ashamed to admit, after four days of thinking about a resolution, I just never thought of that one. *sigh* I know for next time, right? LOL

I.O.U sibyl. Thanks again!  :smitten:

glad its solved  "Sally"     heh
Ive only seen this happen one other time and the member had deleted them from Edit Smileys.
Will try to keep this resolution in the back of my brain for when someone else has an issue with them.
