What he said was that the error you are getting could occur if you do not have welcome configuration configured properly

Oh, I see. I parsed his answer wrong. He quoted the error and replied. Sorry...

Could you please ask him to look at my configuration and see if it's configured properly?

I looked at the "Welcome Config" item and see nothing of interest there, in fact, there don't seem to be any settings to change anyway. What am I missing?

And AFAIK I didn't change anything between when it was working and when it stopped working, though I don't know exactly when it stopped working. I didn't even know about the "Welcome Config" item.

Hello? Anybody home? It's been almost 2 months since I originally posted this note.

Come on folks. It's been about 5 months since I originally posted the issue, and have heard only once from somebody who could actually look at the problem last Feb, and to answer his question (which I already did), no, it's not the ISP. All the admins on several different ISPs, ALL stopped getting notification of new members at the same time. Also, my wife has another forum elsewhere (both paid for, BTW) that started having the same problem. And again, the notification of new postings DOES work. So that's TWO datapoints indicating that it's not my ISP, it's most likely in smfforfree.

Could somebody please look at what's going on? It's irritating to have to look regularly for new signups and it's supposed to work.

Figured it out. You have a custom field called country needs to be renamed. Since we already have a field called on Country on that page.

Thanks for looking at it. I noticed that several fields have the "Field Description" field as "Country", is that what you mean, they all have to be unique? I've now changed them. If that's the case, why would the duplication of the field description prevent emails?

It's very strange, it was working and without changing the field description, all of a sudden email notification stopped working.

You didn't answer the question to clear things up, so I tried renaming the fields that were all called 'country' (a victim of copy/modify :-) ) and that doesn't seem to help. Somebody signed up and I still didn't get an email about it.

Please take another look.

While not logged in on your forum click on Register.     Look down thru and you will see there are still two fields there for Country.    One is from one that you added via Custom Profile Fields.
Then look further down and you'll see the other one.      (Gender, Birthday, Country, Region, Zip)  That one exisits on all forums.    You need to rename the Country Field that you created.

Oh, I see, there was already a standard country item, I didn't need the custom country field. OK, I fixed that. Now when I try doing a test signup, I still never get email, and about 1/2 of the time I get the following error. I thought it was because I left some fields blank, but in trying multiple times, that doesn't seem to matter.

There is still country listed twice in that error. Is the country field still active?

I still see two country fields on the registration page
Paul make sure none of your Field IDs match - that field shuldnt have been changed - should be CP1 - CP2 , etc, otherwise you run into errors.

Try removing the Country field you created - see if that clears this up.    Since there is already a Country, State, Zip field by default doubling up on them is causing you a problem.

Sorry to be dense, but I'm still confused. I've looked all over and can't find where I can see the standard country, state, and zip of a given entry. That's why I put my own fields in there, and I've renamed all of them now to be like YourCountry, Yourstate, etc., so there should be no conflict. I think they're all that way now.

I did have one like CP4, I changed that to reflect the field name more, I didn't understand your suggestion I should have left it CP4?

AFAIK, all my field IDs are unique. But I still never got the signup message that you received. I'll change to a gmail account and see if it goes there OK.

You won't see the standard ones in your settings anywhere..   I believe that may be a mod that SMF added some time ago -  helps keep spambots from signing up.

Since it did send that one to me we know its working  (sending the emails out) so definitely check your email settings, filter settings, junk mail, spam folders.   Somethings blocking you getting them.

Are you still getting the database error msg when someone registers?
If you are I would disable (get rid of) that Country one that you made and try that.
By your having it there they are having to do it twice anyways - same for the region and zip code.
Yeah Ive seen people have problems because they renamed those field IDs - they should probably be left alone and left as they are assigned when you set them up.
