ban on hostname.
You can also ban a range of ips.
Or ban on email.

Every computer has a main ip.
If you get that one, you could ban him on that.

Not if their on DSL/cable. Its best to ban someone by the "host name". You can also ban a "range of IP's). Banning one simple IP in this case will not do any good.

Can someone please explain what sort of "attack" could be involved, how you find the "host name" and whose "host name" you need.  "localhost" and "linuxbox" are two host names probably used quite commonly.

the ISP host name of a member is shown on their profile page. The attack is probably a member spamming their forum. When someone is on highspeed internet it is hard to ban them by their IP address because it frequently changes. The host name is the root of the IP providers server where the "range of ip's" are stored. Those IP's are given out randomly. If you ban by host name you can gennerally stop them in their tracks.

DC is correct.   Keep in mind each situation is going to be different and how you ban will be different accordingly.

also..  Kimmie...  what you said about highspeed is not necessarily true.   I use cable, for instance, and my IP never changes.. ever.

yeah some ISP's give out static ip addresses instead of dynamic ones. Mine is different every time I reboot my system :)
