More Problems with ReCaptcha and Visual Verification
« on: July 01, 2011, 11:45:33 am »
Forum Url: http://ddoalliance.smfforfree3.com/index.php
I wanted to register a new account on my forum for testing purposes. Unfortunately, I couldn't seem to get the verification code right. When I try to type in the verification code, I'm not seeing any text appear so I type it out very carefully and when I click "submit", I'm informed that the words I entered were incorrect.

As the Administrator, I also tried to disable all visual verification on my forum without any luck. I lost count of how many attempts and resets I made. I also realize that the garbled word works on a "best guess" basis, but apparently my best guesses aren't good enough.

I then searched these forums and found that I cannot change the visual verification setting because ReCaptcha doesn't allow it.

So here are my questions...

1. Why am I not seeing any text when I try to enter the code into the text field?
2. Can I change the text field or the text to be a different color? (Assuming the issue is black text on a black background.)

And to a lesser extent...
3. Are there any plans of possibly changing to another form of visual verification or provider so that better customization options will be allowed? An option to disable it completely would be really nice.

What browser and version are you using?

We do this in order to help reduce spammers on the forums and can not be disabled.

Your question's #1 and #2:
No there isnt a way for you to change that color unfortunately.  It happens with any dark style as there isnt, that I can see, an ID or Class used for that within ReCaptcha's script that could be added to the styles css to change it.

That is disappointing news.

ReCaptcha really needs more customization options. I understand the needs for it but the level of security settings should be left to the end user instead of being automatically defaulted to "medium".

Anyway, thank you guys for the responses.

It has been just over a month since my original post and now more of my board members are reporting problems with reCAPTCHA.

I've seen that reCAPTCHA has been added for Guests but I have all Guests Permissions disabled. I am wondering if the changes that have been made are somehow affecting my current members. I don't really see how they would be affected, but as far as i know there could be a chance.

What are my options at this point? I know very little about web hosting and would really like to hear some suggestions. Any suggestions. Is it possible to disable reCAPTCHA yet? I can't even find the security settings in the Admin section anymore. If I upgrade the SMF boards, will I be able to get rid of the reCAPTCHA? How much is an upgrade? Should I be looking into something like GoDaddy? I really would like to know which direction I should take to allow for more setting options and customization.

Below is what I have so far...

So I'm trying to reply to my own thread in the build assistance and keep getting the reCaptcha spam prevention circle of doom!

I could throw crap at my screen and get it to work better, and be infinitely more entertained.

This is what Brockson was mentioning earlier on the shoutcast, too many URL's in your posts. That is fine. My member is just as long as it needs to be, nor do I want Russian women who are actually men in Nigeria to take my money.

At least get the reCaptcha to work please. Apparently no matter what you do the URL check always triggers, even with a successful spam check.

Great! I have disabled the spam guard and that should help alleviate some of my headache. Thank You.
