I believe the Announce Topic feature is disabled on the forums.

You could purchase the News and Newsletter feature.
Newsletter System - Mass Email/PM $30.00
Do so via your Admin Panel > Adfree and Upgrades

If I remember correctly it was causing an issue/database size/slowdown with the forums.
That is why some features are disabled (such as spell check)
Its been disabled and re-enabled at times.   As I said in the earlier post Im not positive but I "think" its disabled now.

No wonder my members were not getting the event announcements then lol

no idea emma
but if it allowed you to send it then it must be working and its possible some of your members have it set via their Profile to not recieve them (as Cassel stated) so try setting the option Cassel noted and see if that helps you.  If you have a test account on your forum send the Announcement (if its actually letting you use the feature) only to the membergroup that test account is in so you arent bugging your members to test it 

Possilby someone can verify if the Announcement feature is working on their forums or not (on different servers) as I don't know for sure.

emma I just tried it on my server 1 forum and it does still work.

So disable their ability to stop announcements via their Profile settings and your all set

Admin > Features and Options > Allow users to disable announcements
Uncheck that

I have now unchecked the disable thingy lol

However it must have been working for my site as my fiance is a member and i have just checked his emails (nawty me lol ) and he has recieved them.

So sibyl to confirm hun announcements do work on .smfforfree server.
