Help with news/newsletters & "new post" images

Sometimes my "New" image shows up next to new posts, other times it just shows the text "New" and I want it to always show the image, what would cause it to sometimes show the image and sometimes show the text?

I also have a custom christmas template up which doesnt include the news/newsletter section which I would like to add, can someone give me the "News" code so I can add that please? Thanks so much in advance!
