im extremely dumb.

Quote
Step 1:

    * Admin > Smileys and Message icons > Edit Smileys
Write down the filenames you see there.
      for example:afro.gif  angel.gif angry.gif  azn.gif cheesy.gif

i dont get where i write something down.

im useing v4

In the "Edit Smileys" tab you'll see the file names for each emoticon.  I personally highlighted all of them, copied and pasted in my AOL "write message" box.  You see, for your photobucket emoticons to link to your forum you need to name your photobucket Smileys with the exact same name as the FILE NAME under "Edit Smiley" tab.

I added a new set of smileys. When I go to Admin>Smileys>Edit, they are all there, but when I look on my board, there are only 16 there... any idea of where the other three are?  (lol)

Under Admin>Smileys>Edit check the Location Row.   See if you have any listed as  "Hidden" or "Popup"   ;)
Change any that are to "Post Forum" and they'll show up

First do you have them hosted?  Secondly, do you have them named correctly.  The file name should read at the end for example:

angry.gif
azn.gif
grin.gif

no spaces in the names or it won't work.  The following is something I have been working on for my own use to help me with the smilieys.  It took me a long time to get my mind to understand how to get them up there.  Now it's so easy I am embarrassed.

On your computer, in My Pictures, make a new folder for the smilies you are going to use.  Any smilies you use must be in GIF format.

When you find a smiley you want to use, save image(using right click) to this folder.  I have used a download from http://smileymagick.com/ to illustrate the procedures.  You can use any images that you like.

THE FOLOWING IS AN EXAMPLE WHEN YOU COPY THEM TO THE COMPUTER:

After you have them on your computer, you must rename them to match the smiley names on your forum.

THE FOLLOWING IS AN EXAMPLE OF HOW THEY LOOK AFTER YOU HAVE RENAMED THEM :

If you are using Photobucket, you will have your Main Album called: "Mydangphotobucketaccount"

In that account make a sub album called anything you want; for examply "SMFsmileys"

In that account make a sub album called whatever those smileys are for: "Valentines"

So it would be:

Mydangphotobucketaccount/smfsmileys/valentines

Upload your renamed smileys from your computer to the "Valentines" album.

Each time you want a new set of smileys, make a new sub album in the SMFsmileys album and give them an individual name such as christmas, winter, spring, easter. Whatever you are going to use them for.

Then follow Sybil's excellent instructions for putting them in your forum.  She has been the best help to me to get me to understand all this stuff.

Without seeing into your smiley setup I can't tell where you may have gone wrong.  Copy the code from one of your smileys and post it here, in other words post one of the images.

Biggest errors I see are related to the following:

1.  What address did you put in as the base url?    Do NOT put in the entire url WITH the sub album name at the end.
     a.  If your smileys are in  http://myphotobucketaccount/myname/mysmileys   then put only http://myphotobucketaccount/myname   in as the base url.

2.   Did you name the new smiley set the SAME name as the sub album the smileys are in at photobucket?
      a.  using the above example your new smiley set name would be "mysmileys"
      b.  the forum will look in  http://myphotobucketaccount/myname for the "mysmileys" subalbum

3.   Did you go to Admin > Current Theme and choose your new smiley set  (the same name as your sub album)?

Here is where my smilies are
http://s269.photobucket.com/albums/jj49/cindyvic/My%20Smilies/smilies/
Here is what I put in the base url
http://s269.photobucket.com/albums/jj49/cindyvic/

You need to put this in as the base url:
http://s269.photobucket.com/albums/jj49/cindyvic/My%20Smilies

It is trying to find your smiley set, "smilies",  under cindyvic and since that is not where it is located it cannot find it.

Still red x's .

Okay let's backtrack.
Step 3 in the Guide.   When you created a new smiley set did you name it smilies?

The word smilies has to be in both boxes in this picture where it says album name:

Then under the Settings tab:   Double check to be sure you have "smilies" chosen as the default set.
Make sure under Current THeme you have smilies chosen as well.

bettamom.   I logged into your forum to check and I can tell by checking properties that you have the incorrect URL for the Base Url.

Put in:   http://s269.photobucket.com/albums/jj49/cindyvic/My%20Smilies/

Do NOT put smilies at the end of that... that is how you currently have it.    Because of that it is trying to find an additional smilies folder UNDER the smilies folder.
