Jane, I replied to your same question when you posted it here :

http://www.smfsupport.com/support/general_support/i_lost_all_my_smiles-t4484.0.html;msg21925#msg21925

If you are still using the preinstalled SMF smileys that came with your forum, try this:

Go to Admin CP > Smileys and Message Icons

If you are on Server 2 (smfforfree2.com): Select "Default" in the drop down menu and replace the url thats there with http://theplayground.smfforfree2.com/Smileys (change where mine says theplayground and put your forum name there). Click SAVE. Go to Admin CP > Current Theme - select "Default" from the drop down menu that says "Select default smiley set for this theme" - Scroll down and click SAVE. Refresh your browser. Your default smileys should be back.

If you are on Server 3 (smfforfree3.com): Select "Default" from the drop down menu and replace the url thats there with http://ThePlayground.smfforfree3.com/Smileys (change where mine says theplayground and put your forum name there). Click SAVE. Go to Admin CP > Current Theme - select "Default" from the drop down menu that says "Select default smiley set for this theme" - Scroll down and click SAVE. Refresh your browser. Your default smileys should be back.

(reminder: when posting a help question, please list your forum url)  ;)

I looked at your forum smileys and they are showing up as "Red X's". Check to make sure the names of the smileys you are wanting to use are named "exactly" like the smf smiley names or they wont work. You can see the actual names by going to Admin CP > Smiley and Message Icons > Edit Smileys. Compare the names of the smileys you uploaded to photobucket (or whereever you are hosting them), and make sure they match. Rememeber that the file type ".gif" also has to match.

~~Edit~~ Smileys fixed

Your forum is using smf 1.1.2
Use this Guide... follow every step in it... exactly as it is written.. do not leave out any step and it will work for you:

http://www.smfsupport.com/support/guides_and_tutorials/guide_how_to_replace_smileys_in_smf_112-t3679.0.html;msg18467#msg18467

smfforfree2 is not a version... it just means your forum is on server 2 and all forums that are on that server are using smf version 1.1.2.

you only have one called embarrased because SMF only has one called emabarrased in the smiley folder he has on his servers. When you replace the default smileys with new ones, in essence all your doing is swapping the ones that are already there.

if your saying you tried changing them out and the only one that shows up is that one, make sure you renamed them all correctly (they have to be the exact same names as the ones that are already on there - including the ".gif") or they wont work. All you will get is boxes with little red X's in them.

yep those will work. Just right click on them, saving them on your computer as the actual names you need, (the names that match the smileys you have on your forum) - which will actually save you some time, and then uploading them to a sub folder on photobucket.

When you initially install the smf smilies, you only get the first 16. To get them all (except the embarassed one), you need to manually install the rest of them by doing this:

Go to:
Add Smiley tab
Make sure it says Using Smiley set smf in the dropdown

Use the second dropdown (that says filename to the right of it) and browse thru the smileys to find
the rest of them.    (if you dont remember which ones you need, open a 2nd browser window and go to admin cp > smileys and message icons > edit smileys - to see the ones you already have)

When you find one you want, put a code for it. Something like
Code: [Select]
:-). You can put words there as well.

Put a Tooltip or description for it:  (just something to describe it)

Once you get those akl installed, follow this guide "step by step" and it will show you how to swap those smilies out with the ones you are wanting to use.

http://www.smfsupport.com/support/guides_and_tutorials/guide_how_to_replace_smileys_in_smf_112-t3679.0.html;msg18467#msg18467

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
to get the smileys from that site you want, while you are in the edit smilies page on your forum, write down all those smily names - includng the ".gif". Right click on each smiley you want from that site and click SAVE AS. name it one of the names on that list you wrote down - making sure the FILETYPE is .GIF. save it to your computer. (its probably easiest to set up a folder on your desktop to put them all in so they will be together). Do this for EACH smiley you are wanting off that site. Once you get them on your computer, follow that above guide.
Is this the smiley you meant? . If so, just right click the above image and click save as and save it.
  To get them all (except the embarassed one),
So that everyone knows...  the embarassed smiley is no longer an issue and has been fixed.
There were originally two of them in the add smiley section and only one worked, the other showed a red x.
They now both work, and you can replace both of them.  (embarrassed.gif and embarassed.gif)
