Well,Kimmieb, i will abuse your offer and post... now!
I have another problem... I tried to replace my smileys but id doesen't seem to work...
i'm pretty certain i didn't make any(obvious) mistake but i don't have any gifs show up, only their names(e.g. grin, wink and so on)...
I really don't know what to do... i re-checked my address, i'm pretty certain that they are all named right, and so on... The address in the smiley sets sections seems ok, but...

can you show us what you put in for the base url.. and what you did in the smiley sets section?
Also.. did you make sure to go to Current Theme and choose your new set as the smiley set?

Replacing your smileys for the first time can be pretty difficult (believe me..lol). One thing to keep in mind is, you need to follow sibyls guide she made - step by step - in that order. On your main photobucket page, all you will see are the main names such as: "wink", "grin", etc. You wont see the extension until you click on the smiley and go to the full view page. Then down towards the bottom you will see the entire name of the file.

If you would like me to walk you thru it step by step shoot me a pm and I will be glad to help ya  ;)

thanks Kim :)

I edited the Guide today to try to make it a bit clearer.
Also redid the screenshots.
I was going add the filenames in there but they do need to know what graphic they represent so I think that is really a waste of time.

Sibyl,

I just wanted to tell you that your Smilie Guide was a lifesaver.  Thanks so much for putting that together for us.

This is the complete url that is seen in the "smiley sets": http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k117/nohtun/smiles/

this is the url of settings/Enable customized Smileys: http://s86.photobucket.com/albums/k117/nohtun

And i checked the "smiles" as default, and i went to current themes several times and checked them...

Ps. Great call that you locked the tutorial and split the thread for questions... It is much better that way ;)

Kimmieb, if all else fails i'll start bothering you again :D

OK....sorry if this has been asked before...but the default and classic smiley sets had around 22 smileys I believe...I added all the hidden ones as far as I know. And now I just used the ones that you can see on this forum here, and I counted 32 I think. If we can't add smileys, how can that be possible? why is there a limit and why do we have to keep the same file names, sometimes they don't make sense, like the afro guy, if we don't need it, we'll have to name another smiley afro and people will get confused with it. I love your free forums but why can't there be an upgrade about this? most of my members love to use smileys more than posting pictures, so there's not much difference about the bandwith. So if I now replace my smileys like I did before with the default set, this time will I be able to replace 32 smileys instead of only 22? but why are there more here than in the default set?

Thank you for clarifying things...

The smf set, that you see here,  does have more smileys in it.  There are actually 33 total but only 32 of them work.
One of them (embarrassed.gif)  will produce a red x.   the other embarassed one is not the same style , but the file name is accurate.    (one r.. not two)

SO..  if you install the smf smileys by following the directions here:
 http://www.smfsupport.com/support/guides_and_tutorials/guide_how_to_use_the_smf_smileys_you_see_here_at_support-t3739.0.html

then ADD all of the smileys you can in the Add Smiley part of those directions and THEN follow the guide to replace them you can indeed wind up with more then 19 smileys..

I cannot tell you why you need to rename them exactly or why it will only work with those EXACT file names.

Reason being:    I honestly do not know.

I only know that it is the only way that it will work.   It is the only option we have to change the smileys we get when creating a new forum as SMF has stated he will not be allowing uploading smileys again.     That used to be permitted, but is no longer;   so this is the workaround we have.

thanks a lot Sibyl, even if it's confusing to keep those file names, but it's not that big of a problem..
I read a lot of your posts, they were very helpful  :) I'll probably come back one day for more questions , poor you  ;) :2funny:
Thanks!

thanks again, this will save us time to you and us ;-)

I just edited the Guide for Using the smf smileys you see here at support so it is clearer how many you will wind up with.

Note: to anyone reading this..    To avoid confusion I shall TRY to explain this.

There IS a way to have 32 smileys.

First you install the smf smileys using this Guide:
How to use the smileys you see here at support
I have added a screenshot to that guide today , that includes the filenames, so that you can see which ones you should have when finished.
You will have 32 smileys after doing this.

If you wish to then replace those 32 smileys with your own use this Guide:
How to replace smileys (SMF 1.1)

The screenshot contains the filenames so you will know all of the filenames you need/can use.

As a note to those using freesmfhosting.com, I thought I would save you some headache. It appears that there are 16 smiles used there, not 19 (unless I'm doing something wrong). The file names are:

1. smiley.gif
2. wink.gif
3. cheesy.gif
4. grin.gif
5. angry.gif
6. sad.gif
7. shocked.gif
8. cool.gif
9. huh.gif
10. rolleyes.gif
11. tongue.gif
12. embarrassed.gif
13. lipsrsealed.gif
14. undecided.gif
15. kiss.gif
16. cry.gif

When I try to make a new smiley, it won't allow me to use my own file, and also, it can't import the smilies from my photobucket! any ideas?
