Guest Book
« on: October 27, 2007, 12:14:49 pm »
Hi everyone!  :)

Lately I had to remove the shoutbox from my forum because the anti-virus scan showed a virus threat in it.

To replace this, I made a regular board (thru Admin>Manage Boards) to serve as  guest book for the comments of unregistered guests with permission to access for all guests.  But still guests are not being able to access this board.  Can anyone give some advise to resolve this matter?  Thanks ..

First off, your antivirus only can detect threats that are on your actual computer. The shout box is not on your computer. Its a code that you have put on your forum and is actually applied to the SMF server so your virus program cannot scan it. It can only scan whats on your computer so the threat it detected was not from your shoutbox or any other part of your forum.

As for the board you made, first, you need to modify the board you made for guests and allow them to have access to it. Admin CP > Boards > modify it and tick the guest box. Second, you need to modify the Guest Membergroup (Admin CP > Permissions > Permissions by Board > CHange it to Local --- then go back to the permissions page and modify the guest group) allowing them the permission to 'View Posts". This will alllow them to view the posts on that board. If you want them to be able to post there (or sign it like aguest book), On that same page you need to set the permissions so that guests can post. This will allow them to post in that board as well.

Keep in mind that when you allow a guest to view and post, if the ONLY board you want them to have access to is the Guest Board, you need to make sure you modify all the other boards you have and remove guest access.

Thanks Kimmie.  I went thru all those steps you mentioned.  I wasn't getting it at first but then I did.  As long as the guest membergroup permission was on 'local' it wasn't coming.  Then I tried switching it to 'global' and that worked.  Actually I thought of trying this because I have a polls board which is also open to guests and that's on global too.

Thanks again for your much needed help, kimmie :)

Hmmm, I get your point.  But what's surprising is .. since the last couple of days each time the anti-virus in my pc does the routine scanning, it indicates a virus threat relating to the shoutbox and scares me despite the fact that I've removed the shoutbox and also deleted the temporary internet files.

Well, there is no way your antivirus program can scan your shoutbox because its not stored on your computer. Whats the actual threat/name of the virus it gives you?

ooops kimmie. there seems to be a sudden crisis in my forum.  i've made some mistake somewhere.  except of 3 o 4 boards, the rest have gone from guests views.  only members can view them.  thats becoz i'm not being able to find the option in admin for allowing guests to view.  please help.

Admin CP > Boards > Modify each board and tick the box that says "Guests".

But kimmie, this gives access to guests using the boards.  i just want them to view other boards, except guest book.  Where can i find the option of allowing guests to view other boards?

The issue with the forums is that if you have a board that guests can view AND post in like a guest board or "guest book" like you have, any other board that you have viewable by guests they will ALSO be allowed to post in it. I wish the settings were more specific on each individual board so you could have more control. Right now your only options are global and local which is really to broad of a setting. Maybe that will change in the future versions of the software if they see that it would benefit enough people.

It's been resolved, Kimmie.  I first checked 'guest' in Manage Boards as you advised. And then for each board except Guest book, denied permission for unregistered guests to post.  It took a little time becoz I had to work on each board separately.  But it got done :)  Thanks again for giving so many useful guidelines.

Yeah thats another thing I dont like about the SMF forums. You have to do each board seperately.. :idiot2:

Glad you got it sorted out. If you need anything else just give a shout.  ;)
