Title: Forum Upgrading
Post by: Tweeder on May 14, 2007, 12:09:31 pm
Forum Url: http://arhss.smfforfree2.com
Got a quick question here. I have my board on a free server right now, but I am wanting to upgrade to a paid server and plant it on a dedicated hosting site that way I can have a .com name without the smfforfree2 in the domain.

The board I have now is VERY active, and I was wondering if there is any way to "migrate" the topics and threads I have now onto the new board that I will be building so that we wont lose and posts? Also will there be a way to do it so my members will not have to re register?

Thanks

I did a search and saw where the admin was doing backups for $20 plus $1 for each 100 posts.  Is that service not available?

In the terms of service, it says that the forum admin owns the content.  I understand the need to charge for the service, but if Tweeder owns his content, why can't he get it?

He doesn't offer the service anymore, I guess he changed his mind since that post.

He can't get it because there is no feature that allows him to grab it himself. Backups are a service provided beyond the default features of SMF For Free.
He does own the content..and if he wants to copy it all over to a new forum himself, that's fine.

That's just it.  There is no option to do the database backup himself in the admin center.  I'd have done it for him by now if there were the option.  I know MySQL and would have no problem migrating the forum for him.  So, either he owns the content and can get it via some agreement (opening the ability to do the db backup temporarily, etc.) with the admin or he owns content that, like the equity in my house, he only owns on paper and can't get ahold of!  :)

We're just wanting to get the new board up and going and make the transition as easy as possible for our members, and we are hoping there is a way we can do it so they dont have to re-register and start from scratch.

Well, obviously the terms of service need to be changed because the board owners on this site don't truly own the content of their boards.

Approximately 5400 posts will be lost in the move of Tweeder's board to our network's server.

Approximately 130 posters will have to recreate their accounts.

Only because the option to make a backup of the board's database is not available to the admin of the board.

Then, the extortion begins with a quote of $100 per hour that should just take a click, save and email.
