Title: Domain Manager assistance please...
Post by: nchillbilly on March 30, 2008, 08:48:26 pm
I am relatively new to this whole forum thingy, tho my forum has been up & running for several months now.

I recently registered at GoDaddy.com for my own domain name.  But I find myself a bit confused as to how to insert my new domain name into my forum.

If someone would kindly spell it it out fer the hillbilly, I'd be ever-so grateful.

This post by SMF should help you:

http://www.smfsupport.com/support/general_support/help_with_domainnameservers-t11670.0.html;msg52929#msg52929

Note:  Make sure to use the IP Address for the server you are on.
That will be on the Domain Manager page.

Thank you so very much, Sibyl!

I tried searching for a related topic to no avail.....I'm so glad there was one!

Ok..... I've gotten to this part:
Quote
When completed click on the nameservers button in the toolbar and enter
ns1.yourdomain.com  and ns2.yourdomain.com  replace yourdomain.com with your domain name.

And my problem now is that when I click on the nameservers button I get this:
Quote
If your domain(s) are hosted here, choose 'Default Hosting Nameservers.'
If your domain(s) are parked here, choose 'Default Parked Nameservers.'
If your domain(s) are hosted somewhere else, choose 'Custom Nameservers.'

Default Hosting Nameservers (NS51.DOMAINCONTROL.COM, NS52.DOMAINCONTROL.COM)
Default Parked Nameservers (NS35.DOMAINCONTROL.COM, NS36.DOMAINCONTROL.COM)
Custom Nameservers

So I tried hitting the custom tab & entering what SMF For Free said & it told me that errors were detected.

I'm really not sure where to go from here.

Any ideas?

Or am I simply doing something wrong?

What errors did you get?
Title: Re: Domain Manager assistance please...
Post by: nchillbilly on March 31, 2008, 07:53:29 am
It didn't give me a list of errors, only said that errors were found.

So I stayed up til the wee hours trying to figure it out & wouldn't you know?  Sometimes when you leave out a simple "." nothing goes right.  ;D

So yes, I did figure it out & it is now working properly.  Yippy skippy & woo-hoo, too!!!!

Thank you both so much for your assistance!

This place isn't really so scary...... I think I'll go off & see what I can learn about smiley sets now.   :)

Forum Url: http://letstalkarthritis.smfforfree4.com
I read the instructions as to how to add my domain name and I want to make sure I have this down correctly.

This the the domain Information in my Domain Manager.

Nameserver 1:
Domain: ns1.yourdomainname.com
IP Address:66.135.48.75
Nameserver 2:
Domain: ns2.yourdomainname.com
IP Address:66.135.48.75
And now I have changed the name servers 1 and 2 to reflect my domain name.

This is the information I give to my Domain Resister...Right?

Nameserver 1:
Domain: ns1.letstalkarthritis.net
IP Address:66.135.48.75
Nameserver 2:
Domain: ns2.letstalkarthritis.net
IP Address:66.135.48.75

Once I give this information to my Domain Registrar, I then complete Step 2 and wait for 24 to 48 hour for me to see if the changes took place..right?

How many parked domains may we have?  I have another board here too.

I know you all have explained this "how to tutorial", more than once or twice but I'd rather ask and get it correct the first time.

Thanks for your replies. :)

If you are using GoDaddy do it as SMF said in the link I posted, using the correct IP (the ones you posted) and it'll go fine.  IF you are not using Godaddy let us know (although we cannot know where on every possible domain hosting site you would make the changes)... ..or look around the site you bought the domain from.   They should have instructions there.   Ive found some using Google as well.

The more then one forum thing.    You would need to buy a different domain name for each forum, and yes you could do that.

Sorry to hijack this thread but have a related question...
I have to contact my domain host and ask them to change the nameserver so want to make sure I sent them the right information...
Is this what it has to be changed to..
Nameserver 1:
Domain: ns1.bikers.ie
IP Address:64.34.178.151
Nameserver 2:
Domain: ns2.bikers.ie
IP Address:64.34.178.151

My forum is on server1 ...
And when I get the name server changed is it just a case of going to my C/P and park my domain name....
Thanks for the help.... ;)

change the nameservers on the domain to
ns1.yourdomainname.com
And
ns2.yourdomainname.com

(Replace yourdomainname.com with the domain that you are going to use for your forum.)

after you've taken care of it with your domain host wait 24 hours then go to the domain manager on SMF For Free,  enter your url then change the url on your forum.

Hi Sibyl,

Thank You for replying to my message.

I am with Moniker and I have 2 domain names I bought from them.  I will be adding my other domain name to the second board right before I am ready to open her back up.  I'm reformatting the board now.

If I remember correctly, I am pretty sure that Moniker said to either give them the information you all provided in the Domain Manager or have you contact them but I can't say that's exactly what they said...it was quite awhile ago.

In case SMF has to contact them, which I see no reason too, what information will I need to ask for...from Moniker?  I am new to this stuff too and not sure what I am suppose to do but I will try it the way you all said to.  If that doesn't work then I will come back here and see what other way  we can work it.

Thanks again for your help.

valadi.. I found this doing a Google search .. see if it helps you:

Visit https://www.moniker.com/do/DomMgrList
Click the Domain.
Click DNS.
Click the Name again.
Then change your NS Servers.

Yeah I use moniker as well. You will have to create name server records as well. IN additional to changing the name servers. Its on the manage name server records under the DNS tab.

Sibyl...
The link came back as...

I will go there tomorrow and try and get it set up correctly.

Thanks again for all your help. :)

Forum Url: http://letstalkarthritis.smfforfree4.com

Hi,

I went to my Domain Registrar and added the information needed to use my my domain name instead of a sub domain name.(nameserver and ISP to Smfforfree4 Server and after doing as the instructions said, (I received a success message after I changed it)...I then added my domain name to be parked on your server, in the Domain Manager section.  All that was pretty clear to me but the end information left me hanging.  Could someone explain the color blue information  for me?  Thanks

********************************************************************************************************************

Step 2: - Add the domain to our system

Enter your domain name that you wish to park
http://www.  (added my domain name)

Final Step

After the nameservers have been added takes about 24 to 48 hours for the DNS changes to take affect. (understand this)

You can now try to change over the urls on your forum to your domain name. (not sure about this)

Domains
letstalkarthritis.net VERIFY URL  click on verify link if you see 1  you can update the url. Update Forum Url   (not totally understanding this)   (I did click the Verify link and it brought me to a parked page website with my domain name.  Was that suppose to happen?  After 24/48 hours have elapsed what do I do then...recheck to see where the URL link takes me?)

Reset Default Forum Url to orginal (understand this)

Hope I did everything right, cause I feel pretty much  like a dumb blonde right now... ???

Doesn't seem right

Pinging letstalkarthritis.net [208.73.210.50] with 32 bytes of data:

Currently it is setup for

Domain servers in listed order:

        NS1.DOMAINSERVICE.COM         67.99.176.12
        NS2.DOMAINSERVICE.COM         67.97.247.209
        NS3.DOMAINSERVICE.COM         64.49.213.231
        NS4.DOMAINSERVICE.COM         67.97.247.210

And that is not correct. Moniker you have to create the name server records then point the domain to those two records

Not sure what you mean by this.

This what I changed to my domain name
Nameserver 1:
Domain: ns1.yourdomainname.com
IP Address:66.135.48.75
Nameserver 2:
Domain: ns2.yourdomainname.com
IP Address:66.135.48.75

This is what I added to my Domain Manager at Moniker but there was only one (1) box for the ns1.letstalkarthritis.net and one (1) box for your IP.

I did this according to their instructions.  (FAQs)

I have a copy of their instructions in case you would like to see them.

Please let me know what way you think I am suppose to be doing this. I know for sure you have more knowledge about the 'How To's' than I do.  I just want to get it done correctly.  I would greatly appreciate any help you can offer me. :)

Did a direct lookup on the website url http://www.checkdns.net/quickcheck.aspx?domain=letstalkarthritis.net+&detailed=1   and is still using moniker's nameservers.

Post by: valadi on April 07, 2008, 07:35:32 pm
Why would that be.   I just went back into Moniker and this is the IP that is now listed in the DNS manager
66.135.48.75

Is this the wrong server IP for server4?  This is what should up in my Domain Manger today.

I am new to all this.  I may not be understanding the How To's.

I just checked your link and it looks like my domain name has be stolen and used by someone else.  I have had this domain name for almost a year but never tried to use it before.  Is this a possibility?

That could happen if you let the domain has expied but as long as it is inside your moniker account you control it.

No, it hasn't expired and I am on an automatic renew with them.  It will not expire until the 27th of this month anyway. I also have it protected.

www.sorejointcafe.com    ( formerly  http://sorejointcafe.smfforfree2.com )

Sorry to have to keep bringing this thread up but I need to know what to do next.

I went to my domain registrar and their support helped me get the domain names I wanted to park on your servers pointed in the right direction..

I now can use... www. myforumnames.com and my boards home pages will load.  I can't help but think there is another step that needs to done to complete the process...would that be step 2 in the Domain Mangers section?

Step 2: - Add the domain to our system

Enter your domain name that you wish to park
http://www.

Hopefully this will end the need to keep bringing this thread up.

Thanks for your help. :)

Thanks for checking Sibyl.  I wasn't sure what to do next.

I looked in the Purchase Ad free Credits and they still have my boards listed as @.smfforfree4.com and smfforfree2.com under the SMF For Free Hosting Featured Listing

Will that change to my domain names or stay the same?  Also.  When I buy the ad free credits...Is there away to only let certain members have ad free pages?

I still have tons to learn but I am having fun learning.  :D

For the featured forum listing pm me the posts title's and tell what link they should go to and I will change them.

Currently for ad-free credits there is no way to let certain members have them but that is good idea that I will look into.
