Creating new theme for small change to default theme...
« on: October 08, 2006, 06:39:50 pm »
I'm quite satisfied with the default theme - generally.  My group is made up of mostly older folks & many have complained that the default theme's text is too small to read.  Having them change their browser's settings isn't really an option as many or most of them aren't very computer literate in the first place.

Anyhoo...  when I attempt to change the them or create my own, instead of starting with the default theme (something they'd be familiar with if I just made small adjustments,) I'm presented with a theme that is very different from the original. There's a whole lot of adjustments that'll need to be made to it to make it look like something my members are familiar with.

Is there anyway to make the default theme the one you start with when you hit "create theme?"  That way, I could simply change the font size to 14 or 16 or whatever they're comfortable with.

Thanks...
-Brian

I don't quite understand what you mean. "Create theme"?

I can make a stylesheet with a larger font though. ;)

I think he meant "Create Style"   ;)    there is a little confusion about the "Default Theme" there too..    it means the SMF Default Theme, the same theme here at the Support Forum.  It is the only theme you can edit in there.  crasy does a great job with that  :)

edit:  maybe this will help some

It is not all that clear in Modify Styles I think.
There is a difference between the Default Theme  (SMF Default Theme)   and the theme you set as your forum's default.
When it says you can only edit the Default Theme it means the SMF one.

Clearly, I don't understand all the terms involved.  Basically, I just want the font on my page to be bigger without having to change anything else.  What's the easiest route?  Do I need to create a whole new theme or style?  If so, is there one I can download to my page that mimics the default one that I can easily manipulate without having to learn the entire code for the themes?

Thanks!

Ummm....I don't think there is a really easy way.
You could tell your members to hold Ctrl and scroll down. Or just increase the font size.

two different ways to do that..
you can hold down ctrl and use the + and - keys
or if you have a mouse with a wheel on it you can hold down ctrl  and move the wheel up to enlarge text or down to make it smaller
works in ie and firefox

crasy.. i know you have been doing style sheets for some people..   umm you cannot leave it as is and just edit the font size in it i take it?

Nah, you can't. Because you just end up with a white(-ish) forum and a different font then.
Maybe an internal stylesheet could do this though...I'm thinking, because that would override the external stylesheet.

Having them change the font size on their browsers would be the easy explanation & solution, but most of the users of my forum are older folks & not the least bit computer literate.  I'm just impressed they manage to find the site & register.  It's a support group for widows & widowers, so by default, most of the members are older folks.

I guess I'll play around with the site & if I come up with something functional, I'll share it... although, that seems unlikely.

Admin, you guys got any suggestions?

at least mention to them what we suggested as it works great  :)
Just press ctrl..  use the mouse wheel  (or plus and minus keys if you do nolt have one)
They can easily do this very quickly and it would be something new for them to learn  ;)
I dont know of a way you can do it with the forum itself  :(

Alrighty...  I got it to work for most of the forum.  Strangely enough, I did exactly what I've done in the past.  For some reason, it worked differently this time.

I created a new style & named it "test style."

Then, I clicked the "modify style" button & changed any "small" font to "medium" and any "medium" to "large."  Likewise, anywhere I saw something like "9pt," I bumped it up to "12pt" or so.

I then selected the "test style" as the one for the forum to use & instead of everything coming out white, it looks exactly as it did before, but with bigger fonts throughout most of the forum...

Awesome!

Now, if only I could change the "post reply" images etc!!!  :D
