Ads are a necessary support mechanism for webmasters who provide free forum-hosting services There are some hosting services that have ads that "float" across the page (and also link to unsafe sites). These are some of the same hosting services that charge several dollars PER MONTH for ad-free service. SMF For Free has, by far, the most cost-effective ad-free service fees.

I purchased $16.00 in ad-free service 6 weeks ago, and I have a fairly active forum (over 5,000 posts since it's inception 42 days ago)...I still have over 45,000 ad-free credits left (approximately another 6 weeks+)

Going with an ad-free site is the way to go if you are able to.

I'm fine with the ads,

AS LONG AS THEY ARE OUT OF THE POST.

I almost accused a member of spam. >_<*

But if the ads were below the post, then I'm fine.

If the ads stay in posts, I'll be closing my forum and going to another provider.  I'm getting nothing but complaints from my posters, and I can't say as I blame them.

I absolutely understand the need for ads but it is unacceptable to have the ads placed in the posts.  I cannot think of a more intrusive place for them.

Its only on Server 1 and only on the default theme. I will run it for a couple days and see how it goes.

They are in many themes and not just the default, so we really can't get away from them.  Don't know if that is a mistake or not.  Anyway, no one is happy.   It is INTENSELY intrusive, and definitely unacceptable.  I don't care if the wallpaper of the entire site is made up of ads, but putting them in the body of people's posts is just. not. acceptable.

I feel the need to add that adding extra ads will probably not do much for your CTR.  I don't know about other forums, but ours is completely private and all bots (including Google's AdSense bot) are banned.  Therefore the ads that are being servered are not even close to being contextual.  I would be quite surprised if anyone from our forum actually clicks on the ads on purpose.

Perhaps you should think about different types of affiliate programs that may cater to the viewers a little better.  Your CTR may go up, reducing the need for ads in intrusive places.

So...uh...let's try to remain calm now.
At least try to add to the dicussion if you plan to post. SMF likely understands your concerns right now.

No one on my forum uses the SMF Default Theme, but I still have people getting bombed with ads.  The ads are derailing discussions and driving my posters away.  SMF, I appreciate that your service requires ad revenue to function, but there has to be a better alternative.

The ads are completely intrusive and will definitely drive members away.  I understand the need for ads as well but to place them in the ads is completely unacceptable .... it just cheapens the whole atmosphere of any site.  If they stay within the replies ... I will move to another provider.  Come on ..... you know there are other alternatives !
