how do u add your forum to google.com?

http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=/addurl

Also there are some free sites which allow you to add your site and they will submit for free for you.  It will take a lot longer when free.

you can add your forum link to your siggy if you are on another forum also, but please ask the admins of that board if you are allowed.

also if you find a forum that is similair ask the admin if the 2 of you can swap info and give credit to each others sites.

Add you forum URL to your siggy in email

Another good one i have found is banner exchange sites.  It has brought 30 people to my forum in 2 days.  Works really well.  Submitting to google won't work too good.  You'll rank at the bottom and no one will find your site.

Well you can stubmit a sitemap to google using the following url
http://yourforumname.smfforfree.com/sitemaps/sitemaps.php

Or a yahoo feed list by doing
http://yourforumnam.smfforfree.com/sitemaps/urllist.php

This lets the search engines find the content on your website. Your forum needs to have open acces to public in order for this to work

I have one. If you have a flash you made, add a link to it leading to your forum. Submit it to Newgrounds. Once people start to view it, your forum will get lots of people. You have to have a Grounds Gold account to do it.

It is good to advertise a forum - on forums. I found this one  on FREEWEBSPACE.net/forums
It is good if you can offer something what someone needs, want - you post in threads related to your forum content - you can put your link in the post as long it is not obvious that you're talking about your own site.
Putting link in a sig only is so-so: I've put a banner of an attracting, paying gpt forum under 10.000 posts in getpaidforum - and maybe 2 people signuped.
I was also attracted with - posting contests - top 10 posters/week get $3...and then I stood there even after they stopped paying.

Can you please provide some more details on this method of promoting a forum?  Like, what steps need to be taken to leave my forum link at another site .. ?

The following link exchange site says that they have 52 websites.  If someone puts all those 52 links in their webpage or forum, they will put the link of that forum or webpage in all their 52 sites.

http://www.linklots.com/

But isn't adding 52 links in your forum too much! ?

Hmmm .. actually I'm still in the process of studying about Links in SMF tutorials.  Do these categories & links appear on the frontpage of forums?  If I am exchanging links with another site, do I enter the link of that site in my forum thru this process?  I feel a bit confused about it at the moment.

Hmmm ... I can follow that bit about posting the button on footer.  But can one also post button or codes in signature?  I tried it, wasn't successful.  it was looking too small .. not like yours which looks very nice.

Hi Songbird   :)

Yes,  you can post buttons, pictures, things in your sig line.   You have to use BBCode there.

(remember to take out the spaces.. i need to put them here so the code shows up right)

Well, my site is desparate.

Almost 30 days up, a long time in Google, I did every suggestion I can, and It fails.

I have 400 posts, and 17 members. 4 of which, haven't logged-in in over a week, 3 have never posted.

3 members have over 20 posts, and 3 have over 50. (me included)

The rest are not active at all...

That's the gist of it.

I don't need members, I need GOOD members, ones that will post.

No one even puts input on the site! I have a sugggestions board, and many ways for the member to be interactive with the forum, and I added a guest board so guest can tell me what they think... and nada. only H-gage has responded in the last week and a half.

It's not because my site has bad content, not at all.

1. Member space: an Interactive feature that lets members have their own small forum, and be a moderator there.

2. Daily Sprite comic: A feat not many achieve, yeah, you can have comics, but DAILY? No. Most daily comic sites are their own sites, not a separate site, much less a forum.

3. Member-only Shoutbox.

4. Plenty of advertiseing options, including Footer pics, your own board, and userbars to attract members.

5. Every forum code this site has to offer.

6. Member comics: A chance to make your won comic, and host it on my site.

7. Comic Space: A combination of Member comics and Member space, allows you to not only have a comic hosting, but a comic history board, and forum.

My site has good content, but no posters! I've tried to do as much as I can... and it's not working.

I've subbmitted a site map to Google, but I have no Idea how to verify my site. It calls for a META tag, or a HTML file, and they have to be uploaded to the site somehow, but I'm really confused. So a site map is all I can do.

BTW, this is from google:

Sites' positions in our search results are determined automatically based on a number of factors, which are explained in more detail at http://www.google.com/technology/index.html. We don't manually assign keywords to sites, nor do we manipulate the ranking of any site in our search results.

In general, webmasters can improve the rank of their sites by increasing the number of high-quality sites that link to their pages. For more information about improving your site's visibility in the Google search results, we recommend reviewing our webmaster guidelines. They outline core concepts for maintaining a Google-friendly website.

Have you created a myspace page for your forum?  We have found that this produces fantastic results for us.  Google doesn't do much for us unless someone specifically searches for your site.  Frankly, there are millions of others trying to rank higher than you, and its near impossible to rank at the top unless you get high traffic and what not.  Also, the banner exchanges produce a handful of people per week as well.  Just google banner exchange for that one.  We used to have an smfforfree site, and by the time we closed we had over 120 members.  We have since moved to our own site with the SMF software and 70 of those members have followed us, but at any site, only a fraction of the total members will be regular posters.  We probably have 30 regular posters.  We are still in our beginning stages, but have been fairly successful so far.  We haven't even begun an all out advertising campaign yet.  Also, you need a topic or theme that appeals to people.  Perhaps you should simplify things a little more.  Too many options can be overwhelming to new members and they may not return.  Also, if you have some core members, enlist their help to advertise for you.  I have everyone on my board using word of mouth to advertise for us, and it really does work.  I hope this all helps.

Just go to myspace, and join! Make a site.. in fact... look at mine...

BCF the Myspace!

BTW: My site is looking better, and I have a lot more stuff in the future! I have 20 members now, and a new affiliate! I also created a website using freewebs, not much, but a mediocre site, chock-full of ads for you forum might produce quite a lot of reaction...

Just started it, so There should be some more updates there soon.

Hmm, tips, tips, tips.
I wonder if this would work.

Find a good story that hasn't been reported on much. Something amazing...
Put it on your site, and link it to Digg.com
That can really produce traffic if you picked a good story.

I have added a category in my links mod titled "members sites"
This gives all my members a place to post their site urls. I know some of them are getting a few hits from this.
Title: Re: Tips to Promote your board.
Post by: x-Treme on November 17, 2006, 06:28:48 pm
Well, we all want to get hits...out of which (hopefully) some members. I don't believe in "charging" people posts to do it. However...on my forums, you do need to have posts to add a link. But I usually add it for you if you don't have enough posts. All you have to do is ask..The reason I did it this way is because I want my REPEAT members to have more options on the forum than my ONE TIMERS.I don't want someone to visit my forum just to advertise their site and then never see them again.

though i haven't given the incentive of adding links, it's somewhat the same unexpected issue i'm experiencing.  i've now observed that members gradually do come up to sign .. but just that.  they sign in, then disappear.  out of every 20 members, hardly 2 post regularly.

When it asked to verify that I was admin I had to put a Meta tag I guess I put it in the wrong place or it was the wrong code and now all I see when I go to my site is a black blank page. Yup, it's something in your headers that's messing with the forum. Likely since you put new <head></head> tags in the header.

Try this
http://exotictoaquatics.smfforfree.com/index.php?action=style;sa=clearheader

Go to that link...if the cookie for your forum is still on your computer that might clear your headers which could fix your forum. ;) If it doesn't work you'll just have to wait for the admin to clear your headers for you.

I have copied and pasted directly from the address bar:

Now, maybe I am seeing things - or just thick, but:

This does seem to let me do just that?
Your rules are: 1 topic per board - I have not broken that.
No bumping - I have not done that.

I simply replied (like everyone else) to an Admin topic 'Tips to Promote your Board' in a board called 'Advertise your Board/blog'

This post (#51) was not removed (although it appears to have been moderated...)
One rule and all that!:

Alright, check your PM's...enough of this. Seriously. Gotta keep large topics like this decently organized. It's already gotten a little out of hand in this topic with more support requests, selfadvertisements and requests than suggestions.

Consider this a little warning to keep large already confusing topics like this ontopic. ;)

Here's something you guys will probably like! Create a toolbar for your forum. I created one for mine and it has features like Messages (users can read messages posted by you from the toolbar), Links (I have quick links to important pages on my forum), a radio/podcast player, email notifier (keeps track of your email; works with Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail, and POP3), and weather.

To create your own toolbar for free go to www.ourtoolbar.com

Any other good ways to advertise you're forum.  My friend has got a forum which is about the Bleach manga series.  Ive asked him if he could advertise my forum on his site in exchange for me advertising his site, so we would both advertise each others forums for a better advantage.  But I need a bigger advertising campaign.

forum urls removed -  this thread is for tips  -  not for advertising  ;)

Well you can stubmit a sitemap to google using the following url
http://yourforumname.smfforfree.com/sitemaps/sitemaps.php

Or a yahoo feed list by doing
http://yourforumnam.smfforfree.com/sitemaps/urllist.php

This lets the search engines find the content on your website. Your forum needs to have open acces to public in order for this to work

Pretty sure that in order to submit a site map I need to get my forum verified. It asks to pick either a meta tag or html file.

I know there are some restrictions to messing with any meta. Can I use the meta tag for the Google verification, or should I pick the html file?

Thanks!

This is kind of cool...I made a tool bar, not sure I`m going to use it, but thanks for the idea.

as mentioned above i dont need like A TON of members but i need active members who log on daily and post daily but more members wouldnt hurt. I have added my site to google msn and yahoo and various other stuff. I would advertise my site but MOST of the sites i post in have a NON ADVERTISING rule meaning any links found not approved by the Staff can result in suspension from my account and id rather not .-.

I have included a 'sites you recommend' section on my general forum. I am happy for people to advertise there, and most "admins" that do, reciprocate.

The best form of advertising is of course referrals - if members are happy they will invite their friends.

By submitting your site to search engines, they send bots to your site. Where they basically crawl your site and learn all the public info about it. It than adds it to it search. lets say your site was ikevin.smfforfree.com , and you had some cool water guns for sale. well if you submitted your site to google and their bot picked that up, it can be found in a google search like "Kevin's Water Guns" or something :P.

One thing I don't recommend that anyone tries is posting a link on a site such as facebook. I foolishly decided to try this and the result was over three hours of deleting abusive posts and the posters accounts were banned.  >:(
On the whole this was a pointless excersise that cost me dearly, too.

I had a new member join today that had spotted the link on my facebook profile, probably had about 20 members in total from there, no problems as yet.

I assume your profile is 'public' for that to happen?
Only people I have accepted as 'friends', (Admittidly I don't know, nor would I want to, half of em!) see my site - Thanks for the heads up!

Tips To Get More Visits On Your Website/Forum

Here everyone,am going to show you some good points to get more viewers on your forum, Wink

1/ Content

You must have good content on your website/forum if you'd like people to read it,ect.Try to have things that you can't get anywhere else,so the viewers will come back to your website/forum to read on the juicy info.

2/ Buy Ads {Adwords}

This is one of the best ways to get people to visit your website/forum.It is possible to buy ads to display on other websites so it can attrach loads of people to your website/forum.

3/ Have free stuff

Everyone loves free stuff.You all know that,lol.Example,forumotion offers free forums,and it's very popular.So,the best way to get people to visit is if your website is free.And you can offer things people wants for free. {If you have a shop or something,it doesn't have to be free}

4/ Meta Tags

Remember,in order for the bots to know what your website/forum is about, you'll need good meta tags to support it.

5/ Forum Signatures

This is also a great way to steal viewers, lol. Add your website/forum in your signatures on other forums to be used as your signature so others can view what your website/forum is about, and if they like it,they'll visit.

6/ Review Your Site

Some websites/forums reviews other website/forums. This can increase the number of views on your site if you have a great review.

7/ Blog

This is also a useful way to attract viewers. Blog about your website/forum and you'll get more visits from people who loves to read blogs.

8/ Appearance

Make sure your website/forum 's appearance looks good.If your site is ugly, the viewers will not bother to read whatever your site has to offer.

9/ Link to Us

Have a link to us page on your website/forum. Ask the viewers to help out your by showing them the bbcodes & html codes they have to copy and paste to advertise your site.

10/ Invite Your Friends

You should invite your friends you know and trust to visit your website/forum. Don't spam up stranger's private message box asking them to join your forum and offering them staff positions just so that they confirm your message with a yes. And then you conplain that your website/forum is destroyed.

11/ Affiliates

Affiliate with other websites/forums to up the number of visitors on your site.

12/ Bookmarks

Have a page asking your viewers to bookmark your website/forum so they wouldn't lose the link to your site if they searched it by using a search engine. {For people who just don't read website's names}

13/ Submit your site to a search engine

Submit your website/forum to the search engines so people can find it when their surfing the internet.

Hope your website/forum gets more views after you did the following tips I suggested, Hello

submitted by Jalokim,, tnx

I know you from Forumotion Support forums. Forumotion is boring. But it is great.
I put it like this;

I made a bebo for forums
I made a msn for forums
I made a facebook for forums
I made aim for forums.

Thats how. I just did it now so i can get heaps more people :)

Worked on my old forums. :)

The meta tag suggestion is new to me..

I thought we did not have access to alter things like that, or our header info etc...

If we can add or change our meta tags, can someone point me in the right direction ?

Ok, I'm going to make a step by step Guide on Keeping members on your forums and get members on your forums.

How to Get Members:

Step 1: Put your URL in all your profiles on forums and websites that allow you to advertise in your signature.

Step 2: If you have a SMFforfree go to Admin CP> Promote Your Forum > And then pick where you want to  advertise your forums.

Step 3: Go to Advertising sites or Top site lists so that members will come to your forums. If its a Runescape private servers go to the runescape private servers advertising page.

Step 4: Once you have done that then tell your friends about it.

Step 5: Make some fake accounts with 10-20 posts so that people think that people are actually on the forums.

Step 6: Wait for members to Register and then you'll have  a good forum.

______________________________________________________________________________________________

How to keep members on your forums:

Step 1: Make contests so that members will stay and do stuff to win. Make the rewards good.

Step 2: Make your forum intresting. Add Arcade and forum games.

Step 3: Every couple of weeks give some people a chance to be staff.

Step 4: Make a MOTW. Member of the Week gets 20 posts. Something like that.

Step 5: Every hour or then make a new member so that people think the forums going really well so they staff.

Step 6: Ask members for help so they think they are helping the community

Step 7: Give rewards To people who help or get a milestone so that people think that if they do that they'll get rewarded.

Hope it helps.

A couple of similar topics -  both are listed in the Guides and Tutorials Index that is stickied to the top of the Guides and Tutorials Board  ;)

These two though I don't think are a good idea.  Its never a good idea to run a forum by misleading those you want to use your forum.

You must update on a fairly regular basis... it becomes a personal thing... dont rely on others to promote your forum.... if you dont update, the servers cannot tell whether or not, its up n running... but they do when the admin has updated it.

I bombard the servers... google,Bing,Yahoo.Jeeves...  just to let them know "Im here"

My forum now is not only TOP LISTED, but has been accepted by many large promotional websites.... within the field of camping.

"...the best way to promote your forum and to become known on forumland as a livewriter, or whatever you would term someone known for their posts then..." mentioned the goblin, adding "...in fact, nothing tells a poster more about what he or she can expect than seeing a dull post linking whatever, whereas if your posts are inspiring, they will simply google your username and find you even without adding a link...", in fact, what the goblin had forgotten to add, was that it was best to have a unique username, and an evident persona, so the goblin just smiled, saying "...this way, any post you do anywhere draws people towards you without even thinking about it..."

I have not read through this entire topic, but would like to just give my two cents, and apologies if someone else has already covered ..

Promoting is to progress or encourage … The real question is how to get our forums to be seen on the internet.

Content and indexing are the key .

Creating a title that is made of of key words specific to the content of the forum.  Creating boards within that are specific to that content.

Submiting the forum to at least the most popular search engines.

I have also found Google Blogger an ideal tool. They are indexed quickly and can be found on the first page of search engine key word results if done correctly. Making sure that the title is made of of key words relevant to the content.. Make sure the description for the blog is also relevant to the contect and title. Key words and content are king when it comes to being properly indexed.

Submit posts to the blog that are linked back to the forum..  Also use SMF's social media buttons and share topics to Facebook and others.

Hope this makes sense and helps a little..
