I found out about SMF by first belonging to forum that was ran using the paid smf(I think, or at least one VERY similar). After deciding to venture out on my own and create my own, I started with Google searches and finally found smf, thankfully. ;)

I had been looking for freeweb hosting that was good for a long time and I had been hanging out at moparscape.org/smf (http://moparscape.org/smf) for a while (I had always wondered what SMF stood for, lol). Since it was a SMF site,I saw some1 on there and it had the part near the avatar where the AIM, Yahoo, all that stuff is, it had their website. So, i felt like checking it out and I thought "what?" It looks just like Moparscape. org!
So I asked the owner of the site and he told me about this place!
Im glad I checked out his site or I never would've found such an awesome place!

I actually found it through one thing: Not a Search Engine: But from a 20 year-old guy! It sounds wierd, yes, but I actually found SMFForFree through an adult. It's wierd because I'm only 10 :coolsmiley: Ok, here's the story: I was playing basketball, and then this guy walked up...It was 3 on 2, so we let him in, cool game and all, but then he started talking about his website. He mentioned the name to my friend, and I didn't get it...So I asked him what the "SMFForFree3" Was. He said that it was a cool thing that let you create sites and not have to pay a penny. At the time I wanted to create a website so bad... Because I had a club of about 90 people, but only a few signed up. It was called "AMS Harp Seal Society" the www infront of it was just a typing error. So there concludes it.

As a member of a few forums i much prefer the user interface and styling of the SMF platform as it is very easy and simple to use but allows for such a high degree of customisation so that each board carries its own subtlties

Over two years ago my forum was with another host and running phpBB.
It was clumsy, lacking alot, and their service and support was horrendous.
The forum was down, more then it was up. My members had about had it.
I knew about the simplemachines software, liked the way the forums work,
so did a Google search and came upon Smf For Free. I browsed all through
the support forum before signing up for a forum and found it very helpful here.
That was a plus in my book as I had no idea back then how to do anything with
the software. Was a wise move.. members are happy.. forum works great.

Well, I used to go on the Pokemon Crater Forums. It shut down, and one of the admins started a new forum called Aisenfield (http://aisenfield.smfforfree4.com/index.php). So yeah. The people from the old PCF forums came there.

First there was Pokemon Journey Online...It crashed about two months ago...
In Yahoo questions/answers, somebody was asking what happened to it....
One answer said the backup retreat site was up...I went there...
It turned out to be an SMF for free site...I clicked the 'make your own' and viola!

I discovered SMF for free when MSN decided to ditch their Groups and I was looking for a new home for Xtra News Community 2 (a group of mostly Kiwis, but with a sprinkling of members from elsewhere around the world).
I didn't like the look of Multiply, which was being promoted by MSN. A number of other groups migrated to Multiply and alhough everything was transfered across okay, the Multiply format sucks.
So we sat back and watched to see what some of the other groups did. A lot of them were migrating to Yuku or ProBoards, but in the end we noticed some of the Aussie groups moving to SMF for Free and after looking carefully at all options, we eventually decided SMF was by far the best format, so created out new group with SMF for Free.
We copied and archived the old group at MSN ourselves. One of the moderators copied the entire group and ALL embeded files (including those hosted elsewhere away from MSN) onto one of the servers at his business. MSN cut him off twice (he didn't tell them what he was up to and I imagine MSN thought they were on the receiving end of a denial of service attack), but both times he was cut off, he changed his IP number and got right back in and carried on until he got the entire group. We are about to burn it onto DVDs (we can fit the entire contents of the group on a single DVD) and make it available to any of the members who would like a copy.
And.....several months at SMF for Free have proven to us we made the best choice. SMF rocks!!!

first 3 years me and all my friends was playing runescape
but when we got in high lvls and pwned all the noobs
we got bored... and then we found rs private servers
that was a little more funnier and after that me and another friend
decided to start one ourselfs Smiley we did it but we got help from

and there we saw a topic with the domain name smfforfree
and we tryed it Smiley
its the best thing ive evere done Smiley
and now i got over 10 sites Smiley

I was actually going to try to install SMF (the regular one), but was not able too, and I noticed at the bottom, of the page there was a link to SMF for free, where they have for if one has troubles installing SMF,...so I tried the SMF for free, and am glad I did,

Looking for some help and advice please.
Over 10 years ago a forum began called Featherstonemad / Make A Difference Forum. It definately made a difference and was alterred a town for a short while for the good. It was started by a great guy and computor buff who has sadly just past away. I and another person were moderators. I do not wish the forum to close and wish to keep it going especiallyb as I think the town needs it again. My question is who should I contact to alter the ownership and take over any costs? Any advice walmly welcome.
