Captain of an empty ship
« on: December 23, 2005, 04:33:10 am »
A while ago now, I created a smf4free forum with the hope that I'd be able to add it to my wap site. It looks fine in its wap1 version, and gorgeous in its wap2 version. Looks are very important, and it looks so professional with a minimum of effort, that it couldnt fail to tempt people to logon and start posting. 2 months later however, I'm still waiting for my first visitor. My site isnt the problem, as I have 1000s of visitors every week to rummage through my extensive content and downloads. Being a wapsite however, the forum has to be accessible to phone users. Wap1 users can only read the forum topics. No option to write, logon, or anything. Wap2 users have the option to logon and add topics, but only by first opening a smf4free account by pc and getting a username that way. It looks like the most promising hosted forum on the planet is going to be just another white elephant I'm afraid. Wap users are crying out for forums such as this one. Web users are flooded out with message board choices. With a virtually untapped market at its disposal, are smf going to apply wap functions, or are they going to miss a golden opportunity? I'll sit in the bridge of my empty boat for a little while more and see...

Yeah, these forums were not orginally meant to work with cell phones for everything. I have found that many are trying to create forums using their cell phones. It really depends on the next version of SMF if they will try and add some extra features for wap users.   Well other advice try and submit your forum to many cell phone sites and get the them to link to you.  The forums that you create here are automaticly indexed into google.

Thanks, but that hardly helps much. I'd say that 99percent of my visitors use their cellphone to access my site, which means that no matter how many sites it was linked to, registration to post would still have to be done via the method outlined above. A huge proportion of those would have no desire at all to sign up to a forum building site, which is the only way in at the moment, so it just creates confusion as to what theyre actually signing up for. As I said, I'll wait and see...
