SMF Spammer???
« on: August 10, 2008, 01:45:22 pm »
Forum Url: http://www.illinoisprisontalk.com.smfforfree.com
I have an SMF board and today a suspicious email/IP attempted to join the forum.  We operate strictly on the approval system.  I googled the user name and notice that this user QwertySMF had joined numerous SMF boards today.  The IP is from the RIPE network.  I haven't given approval.  Does anyone have any information about this username and the email name of tlen.pl    ??  In the Error log there were several errors with a tag of 'template' on them???

I want to add that qwertySMF now has several pages of profiles on forums on Google, all joined today...

I've looked at my forum error log and it appears they might be trying to access the main template.

Apparenlty they've been identified by http://www.stopforumspam.com/ as a spammer from Poland.  They now have about six pages of Google entries for all the forums they've joined today....except mine ;D

I think they're getting the forum sites from this SMF board.  I don't know what they're trying to do to our template but this should be a caution to everyone....they are a member here now.

Hi Dazzler,
It sounds like a spammer to me, and I'm sure I've seen that id before on the Qwerty part.  There's several tricks to running a spammer ID I've learned over the last couple years. Running the IP in google search will often prevail other spam lists from forums that keep a thread that is keeping track of, and also running the id or sometimes the id on the email does not match the log in id, so running that can sometimes prevail.  In the ip trace, run the name of the company that is registered through google too! You'll be surprised what crops up for information allowing you to ID a spammer before they can spam your board.  And yes, those bots are smart enough to break through registry process's.  It just takes them a bit to do so.  ;)

In banning a IP of a spammer, sometimes this works, but with bots involved they just use a new id and show up with several ip's that generally are similar just in progressive order,  so add to the banning with the host name that shows up in the profile right under the ip when possible, this generally is very effective since it covers the whole and not just one ip number.

I hope you find some of these tricks helpful to you!  ;D

Thank you both.  Yes, I've had a lot of spammers, but they aren't usually able to break through the security measures.  This IP is similar to others we've banned already.  We also run Stat Counter and they don't even appear in the visitor's list.  Thanks for the tips and maybe this'll stop them from spamming every SMF site they find...but you're right, they do keep coming back...

Well first you look on other forums for the same ip if they can let you see it but they mostly have the same one. ( name ).

When i was on the forum : runeore.org/smf/ they currently had spammers and Rude bots.
It got really annoying

The best way to stop spammers is to enable some sort of Captcha protection on your forum. Preventative measures are the best measures.

From there...dealing with them on a case-by-case basis is the best way. If you notice any sort of "user" signing up on many forums and causing problems...let us know. Then we can deal with it.

Thank you Dazzler :)
