Down load Ccleaner..it's free...
http://www.ccleaner.com/

There are two major features
First it deletes all temp files that are stored on your computer
that may contain unwanted or unnecessary files that show you
computer down.
Secondly click on Issues it will delete all unnecessary dll's that are
left in your registry from programs that you have deleted or that have been installed
by trojens. These dll's cause your computer to search for the programs on your
computer when in fact they are no longer in use, slowing you computer down
or causing it to crash.

It has been my experience that what ever Ccleaner discovers I simply
delete or allow Ccleaner to repair. This program has never let me down
and I trust it explicit...At one time I used to edit my registry manually which
took hours of tedious work....now it's done in seconds...fantastic...

Enjoy you computer....

Don~

CCleaner is a good program, I use it on my systems,  but you have to be careful with it. Especially when it comes to deleting .dll files. Just because CCleaner says it doesnt find a program that is currently using that particular dll and its safe to delete doesnt mean it is. If you delete the wrong .dll files you could do some serious damage to your system. Which is why I edit the registry myself. Yes, it can be tedious at times, but its worth it because I wouldn't dare trust any 3rd party software to make changes to the registry on my system  ;)

For anyone who isnt very knowledgeable on how to repair registy entries, and has never used a program like CCleaner, I highly suggest making a backup of your registry before trying "any" program that will affect it.

well I've been at computer repair since the days of simple floppy drives..smile...
considering the info she provided she may have to reinstall xp but she should
make sure that she has cleaned out all the crap first....mostly if she has never
edited the register before this is her safest recourse...???

Anyone not comfortable editing the registry, I would highly recommend NOT using a program that will modify it. If it deletes one that it shouldnt have, your not going to know how to repair it, and it will also cause more stress to an already stressful situation  ;). If your going to do an OS reinstall anyways, there is no sense in going thru cleaning everything out (unless its to back up your data). Thats a waste of time.  ;)

Yeah, I have been working on computers since the days of batch files and DOS..lol. Which reminds me...I am trying to create a batch file delay but I cant for the life of me remember the command. Do you know anything about batch files Don? I would appreciate the help. I cant seem to find all my old DOS books  :-\

Re batch file delay...maybe...

    ECHO. |TIME > TIME
    COPY LOG +TIME

An alternate, slightly more complicated method that, cannot be used in Windows NT, Windows 2000 or Windows ME would be the following:

    echo @prompt set date=$d$_set time=$t$h$h$h > {a}.bat
    %comspec% /e:2048 /c {a}.bat > {b}.bat
    for %%v in ({b}.bat del) do call %%v {?}.bat
    echo %date% %time% >> log

    Another alternative is:

    echo. |time |find "current" >> log
