Windows XP help
« on: April 22, 2007, 03:19:48 pm »
Is reformatting win xp the same as reformatting win98?  Meaning the same steps.

Thanks for any help in advance!

they are similar but not totally the same.

WIn 98 runs on a FAT32 file system.
Win XP runs on a NTFS file system

You just need to make sure when you repartition the drive you reformat it using NTFS.

Which OS? 98 or XP? If the OS you have on your system is currently WIn 98 Professional, and the CD you have is XP  Home it should automatically give you the option to reformat using NTFS.

Edit: just reread what I wrote..lol. There is no Win 98 Professional... its either win 98 or win 98 SE..lol

reminder:

when you reformat you will lose ALL your data. Make sure if there is anything you want to keep, its backed up.

Oh, guess I wasnt very clear, silly me!!  The OS is WINXP professional, but the CD I have, which is brand new, never been opened is the home edition.  The main reason I am reformatting is it is BEYOND slow! And the memory is very empty so I know thats not the issue, I cant seem to figure out what the problem is, so I figured to just reformat, lol.  Its a hand me down someone gave to my son ,he USED to have 98, thats where my comparison came from, sorry for the confusion, lol...there is no data on there to lose really, and if there is, I am fine losing it, as it isnt mine to have anyway

lol no problem. If your system is slow, I would suggest doing things like "Disk Cleanup" first/ When was the last time you defragmented your harddrive? Go through your add/remove programs and delete any programs you no longer use. Also, check your startup files. When you have alot of processes running in the background it slows the system down, and uses up alot of your resources (memory)

I never do an OS reinstall unless it is absolutely necessary.

if you already have XP on there then your drive is already formatted using NTFS so changing from one version (professional) to another (home) wont be abig problem. The Installations on both are the same. The professional version just has more "bells and whistles" because it is geared for network use.

I sent Sassy this in a pm but I am gonna post it here because it will help out alot of folks. :)

To free up your system from using alot of startup processes, go to:

Start > Run > type in MSCONFIG

Click on the Start Up tab. UNCHECK everything on that list that you dont use, or that you can start manually yourself by going to the start menu and running the program.

Click APPLY, then click OK. Restart your system. You will get a dialogue box at bootup telling you that you have used "Selective Startup". Check the box that says "dont show this again" and click ok.

Your computer should boot up alot faster now, and also run smoother.

If your not sure what the process is, check it out first by going to www.tasklist.org :)

There was only 3 in the list and none were checked, hmmmm, odd

Down load Ccleaner..it's free...
http://www.ccleaner.com/

There are two major features
First it deletes all temp files that are stored on your computer
that may contain unwanted or unnecessary files that show you
computer down.
Secondly click on Issues it will delete all unnecessary dll's that are
left in your registry from programs that you have deleted or that have been installed
by trojens. These dll's cause your computer to search for the programs on your
computer when in fact they are no longer in use, slowing you computer down
or causing it to crash.

It has been my experience that what ever Ccleaner discovers I simply
delete or allow Ccleaner to repair. This program has never let me down
and I trust it explicit...At one time I used to edit my registry manually which
took hours of tedious work....now it's done in seconds...fantastic...

Enjoy you computer....
