I've tried googling but it's kinda hard when you can't really give specifics. I'll provide an example of what the word is used for. Say a law is created and even though it didn't come into effect after an incident has happened they still can charge the people involved or whatever. I know there is a word(s) which pretty much means something done now can still be acted upon even though something has already happened.
If anyone knows the word or can help me out I'd really appreciate it.
Edit: Using a reverse dictionary I searched for the word 'past' and came up with the word I was after. In case you were wondering it was retroactive.

It's not wrong but not the right word for the context I want to use it in, thanks anyway.
