Barack Obama

I just wanted to post my views on the new President, Barack Obama. Now, I am definitely in no way racist and I don't have a problem with anyone (Unless they have a problem with me). I just feel that black people are making such a big deal about this. I know it is a HUGE thing, but, when I was watching the news I noticed that at all the celebration parties etc almost EVERY single person was black. I feel that because they are making such a big deal about it, it is clearly stating a huge divide in peoples colours and cultures. It's making black people feel that they are more important, and I believe that black people will now think they are more powerful than anyone and will do things to show this. I just want to state again I am NOT racist, please don't take this the wrong way. I feel that Barack Obama should just be accepted into the office with no special parties for people, just because he is black. Because there is loads of celebrations about him being black, it is clearly outlining divides in peoples skin colour. Does anyone understand what I mean? And what is your views on this matter?

This is a pretty loaded topic. I hope everyone can take it with a degree of respect.

I don't care who thinks who is more powerful; black people or white people.
Because THINKING you are more powerful will never result in any power. So I don't care who thinks what. I figure whoever gets the power deserves the power, regardless of their race or feelings. And by having a black person in office it doesn't mean black people are more powerful.
Because Americans didn't vote for "black". They voted for Obama.

Also Didds, Barack was won majority over states with large white populations too.

If my favourite band won an award, I would hope I could be there. Chances are the place I went to would be full of people like me. This isn't a 'division', it's just how it works. Like people in one place.

There should be congrats for Obama. He's a great guy.

Didds do keep in mind that we see on tv what the news media wants us to see - what they film, what they decide we want.     I will say that being a caucasion gives me NO insight into exactly how those of color have to be feeling about this day  (which to me is an extremely good day for our country and for the peolpe in it no matter their gender or race)     I can only imagine..   and realizing as closely as I possibly can how they must feel makes me feel they deserve the attention..     it shall pass and the country shall get down to the business at hand.     Tell me this Didds..   if you were black..    if you knew the history and knew what blacks HAVE had to endure over the years and the racism that (sadly)  DOES still exist in this country..  would YOU not today feel that this is a huge step forward for your race?   Would you not feel that when you tell your children they can accomplish anything that they can now REALLY believe it?      I think a little celebration and acknowledgment of how far we have come;  that we actually  DID elect this man --- is important, necessary, and no one should complain about it.    There is no way that this event could pass with OUT mention of it.      I voted for the man.    Most of my friends voted for the man..    and we did not vote for color.    I have friends of all races.   They did not vote for color either.    They in fact have felt insulted when they have been told it was a given they would.    One of my dearest friends, a black woman, did not vote for him.. she had to follow her instincts and did what she feels is best for the country.     Its not always about color ...   and I for one am not the least bit bothered by the press about it

Quote
it is clearly outlining divides in peoples skin colour.

deary those divides, for those who think in that way, have been, and always will be there ...  (thats their issue -   i have no regard nor respect for those that are racist)
The press has been showing us all sides.. it depends on how YOU see it from your own perspective.
I have seen the busses of white kids from schools there today -  the faces of whites crying, screaming and happy.. just as I have seen the hispanics,  the blacks,  etc etc etc.

This is a pretty loaded topic. I hope everyone can take it with a degree of respect.

I agree with Crazy..  respect needs to be used in this topic.. totally.

...   Crasy -- and lost a couple with highly black populations..   goes to show people voted for the MAN not his color, as you said.

The man has taken on a poisoned chalice!
His predecessor has changed the world and not for the better.  The children of many nations have been sacrificed on the alter of money/oil. If the new president has one achievement to make, it must be bringing those kids of all nations out of wars that will never be won.

I fear for his safety. As Kennedy was assassinated, obsequiously for his Roman Catholicism, will Obama be targeted because of his perceived difference?

I recall as a trade unionist, the joy felt in the United Kingdom, when the Conservative party were finally ousted after three terms. The country joined in the celebrations as we welcomed a socialist government!

"Things can only better!" This 'promise' was sadly forgotten, as they forced through draconian right wing laws that a Tory home secretary could only have dreamed off!  An example would be the incarceration of terror 'suspects', without charge..... Middle Ages and Witch-Hunt springs to mind....

Things did not get 'better' here in the UK, they have got a great deal worse!

I wish the President well in his role, but as a human being, I wish him safety more!
Let us hope that he does a better job then Bush and the war Criminal Blair ever did!

If anyone wants to question the 'war criminal' comment, please do it apolitically, I am happy to set out reasons why invading a sovereign nation without a mandate from the United Nations would class as a crime.

Yes but, I feel that Black people will think that. I don't mean like average adults, I mean like teenagers and yobs.

anyone with a brain won't feel that way

I would worry more about the state of this country.
I would worry more about friends and neighbors losing jobs,  losing their homes
I would worry more about the cost of our health care,  the state our roads, our bridges, our infracstruce is in.
I would worry more about the men who are fighting two wars for us,   for their familys who are back at home holding down the fort and taking care of things
I would worry more about how other nations perceive us
I would worry more about the cost of food, of fuel, of basic necessitys.
I would worry more about the cost of getting an education.

Those things are a problem as we speak...   they are real

Today I just want to feel a hope for the future,  for myself,  and more importantly for my sons.
Tomorrow I'll worry more about what those we voted into office are going to do about all the issues they have to deal with.   Fun job.. I sure wouldnt want it.

Yes, I would, but I still think that this will cause MASSIVE problems and I think there will be more racism as a result from this. Tell me this Sibyl.. if you were a racist (say, a member of the KKK) and you saw that a black man was now the most powerful man in the world, wouldn't you want to do something about it? You wouldn't just sit back and watch him be in power, you would attack people that supported him etc... I just want to stress again I am not a racist. I just fear that now, because it's been made such a big deal that he is black, it will cause huge uprising...

I asked 100 African Americans why they voted for Barack in a survey, and 83% said they voted for him because they either wanted to show their kids that blacks are powerful too, or because they wanted more pride for blacks.  He is half-white BTW.  14% said "becasue Oprah said too", 2% said that they think that "McCain is old and would die in office".  And only 1% said that they like his political views.

Now, I don't think that they should vote for one bacause of race, because someone tells them too, or because they think the other candidate is old.  I just don't think that that is how elections should be.

I voted for McCain because of his political views, not because he's white.

Didds.. when the American People voted him into office it PROVED that we are all equal, that we can look PAST color, and look at the quality of the man himself.       Sure there will always be those that will not like it but pffffft that is theri issue.    An uprising??    No I dont believe that.    Should his safety be considered?  Of course.  He is the President of the United States of America.    Do you know how many times there have been Assassination Attempts against our Presidents?    Many more then you may realize...  I was abit suprised myself when I read about it one day.    And they were white..   I'll be.     I honestly would spend more time worrying about the important issues that we do have to deal with and let the security he has around him worry about him, as they will.    On a day when there is proof positive that we can all succeed in this country no matter our race (and he is half white remember - and raised by whites)  it does disappoint me that something like this had to be even thought of and brought up.

he said the "son of an African immigrant"   He was talking about his father
Obama was born on American soil in the state of Hawaii.

My personal opinion is that he does not truly represent
a 1st African president. Mainly because he is not a
African at all. He is part Hawaiian, a Heinz 57 sort of speak.
If he was truly 100% African then we could say he would be the
1st African President. He origin is grossly misrepresented.

He was born in Hawaii  to a a Kenyan father and a white American mother.   He is not Hawaiin.    The term was actually Afro American  (or African American) an American of African ancestry   Due to his fathers place of birth the term is appropriate in his case.
