My point was  "whoa"  don't be a sitting duck and have your computer online with no virus software on it at all.

Definitely good advice. Always make sure you disconnect the modem and/or router if your running high speed internet, since anytime your pc is turned on, your connected to the internet - whether you have a browser open or not.

Thank you all for the awesome information.  Sibyl, I am going to run this one that you recommended http://pcdecrapifier.com/ .  I hope it works with Vista too.  Definitely need more cleaning on the desktop that has XP, but I know the new laptop has much advertising stuff on it.  I will only delete things with the Add/Remove if I know I installed or downloaded it and don't use it any more.  Too many things have what I call jibberish for names, things I have no clue as to what they are.  I have Norton, but it came free this time with the new computer as well as Spy Sweeper.  I am very satisfied with both, and have had them before on computers.  Again, thanks everyone.

Yep it works with Vista.   It wont just delete things;  it gives you the ability to choose what you do want taken off there.    Handy program, Ive used it a few times.

Im not horribly crazy with Norton anymore  (humble opinion alert)  I used to be,  eons ago.   They have changed it so much over the years and its a horrible resource hog now.  (opinion mode off)  lol   But at any rate remember you only get the ability to get the virus definitions for a year, then you'll have to pay.  Either do so if you are happy with it, or get another virus program  (the 3 Kimmie mentioned are excellent)

Ild think about downloading Spywareblaster.
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html  Good program (FREE)
All you'll need to do with it once you set it up is remember to now and then check for updates.

(info from their website)
Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.

If ya decide to do so send me a pm and Ill be happy to fill ya in on what to do when you get it installed.

I think a just builded up all the space I deleted, LOL. Btw, if you have a Compaq computer (it my work with other ones) you can call them and they will give send you a disc that will clean your computer out to when you first got it. (I might order 20 of them...)

EDIT: They are free btw. ( I think)
