[Guide] Get a Free .tk domain - Make w/DNS Support
« on: February 07, 2010, 03:59:21 pm »
Forum Url: http://www.sharksoftheworld.tk/
I have seen SMF for Free Forums using .tk, but without being parked, just redirected.  but now, .tk offers DNS support for free domains as well.

1.  Register for a free account
2.  Register a Domain
2.1.  Choose Free Domain
2.2.  Choose DNS
2.3.  Enter ns1.{{yourdomainnamehere}}.tk and ns2.{{yourdomainnamehere.tk}}
2.4.  Enter the IP address listed in your forum's Admin CP Domain Manager as the IP address for each Name Server
3.  Park the Domain in your Admin CP Domain Manager
4.  Wait for DNS to update (may take up to 48 hours, but usually only about 6)
5.  Make it your primary domain after doing the test in the Domain Manager

If i did this, would i have to re-issue my url to all members or would it redirect?

It'll automatically go to the forum, the url will change - they won't get lost  ;)

no i mean if i put it in domain so it would become my domain instead of smfforfree.com

will they still have problems staying logged in? Because a few people do.

No. With this it becomes your domain through DNS settings. If you do it THIS way you won't have the login problems that come with cloaking (using .tk without DNS)

Go to co.nr.
You get an option to turn cloaking off.

So what if co.nr provides that?  So does .tk, which is actually top level.

we know it's better, but some people can't or just don't want to buy a .com, and this is free, so those people get a domain too. ;D

I don't know if having a "domain" is very important anyways. Most people keep their favourite sides in bookmarks/bookmarks toolbar. Nearly every browser only needs keywords to find websites (ie. I never type smfsupport.com/support, I just type "Support" and hit enter")

Best reason for owning a domain is so you can separate your "brand" (the domain) from your hosting (smfforfree). In case you want to make changes later on....
Did my answer help you? Want to help out hosting costs?
